PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Rivas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lyoto Shogun (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Lyoto Shogun told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rivas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Lyoto Shogun!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Thiago Cunha and Edson Gomes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Shogun bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Rivas is trying to buck Shogun off.

Shogun tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Rivas tries to buck Shogun off but Shogun is having none of it.

Shogun looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Rivas tries to improve position but can't.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shogun takes a little break here. Rivas wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Rivas pushes Shogun away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Shogun gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Rivas trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.

Shogun decides to stand back up.

Shogun gets a double leg takedown into Rivas's guard.
Shogun stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Rivas swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Shogun forces his way into half guard.
Rivas really is a fat lump.
Rivas pushes Shogun off looking to stand but Shogun dives back in and keeps control.
Shogun prevents Rivas from improving his position.
Rivas wants to control but Shogun is keeping busy.

Shogun has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Shogun controlling the pace for now.
Rivas avoids a series of strikes thrown by Shogun.
Shogun controlling his opponent.
Rivas is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Shogun controlling from mount.
Shogun can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Rivas is looking to escape.

Rivas is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
Rivas has given up his back.
Shogun has the hooks in. Rivas is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

Shogun has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Rivas has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

Rivas looking very determined here, making life difficult for Shogun.

Rivas is trying to get back to his feet but Shogun has full control of the position and if anything, Rivas has just worked his way into a worse spot.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Shogun slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Rivas needs to keep his hands up - Shogun had a free shot at his head there.
Shogun closes the distance looking to clinch
and Rivas counters with a nice uppercut.

Shogun drives through with a takedown into guard.

Shogun drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Shogun jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Shogun decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Rivas, up you get!

Shogun drives through with a takedown into Rivas's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Rivas wants to get back to his feet but Shogun is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Rivas utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Rivas is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Rivas lands a right hand.

Rivas's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Rivas tries to clinch up but Shogun circles away and keeps his distance.

Shogun fails with an attempt to clinch.

Shogun shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Rivas's guard.
Shogun controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Shogun gets to his feet. Rivas looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Rivas tries to clinch but Shogun is having none of it.

Shogun is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Rivas's half guard.

Well, if Shogun is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Rivas is trying to stand up here but Shogun is controlling him well.

Shogun gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Rivas goes for a takedown in the clinch but Shogun prevents it.
Shogun landing knees to the body.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Shogun ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Shogun no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Shogun escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Rivas gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Rivas won't allow Shogun to sweep him here.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Rivas postures up.
Shogun throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lyoto Shogun showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!



Shogun closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Rivas's guard.

Shogun is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Shogun stands and steps away. Rivas gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Shogun throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Rivas was covering up waiting for the punch and Shogun finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Shogun wants to control from the top but Rivas keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rivas is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Shogun is controlling him.
Shogun content to stall in guard here.

Shogun is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Rivas is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Rivas has escaped and now he's on top!

Rivas gets to his feet. Shogun looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Shogun drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Rivas preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Rivas wants to stand but Shogun is controlling the position.
Rivas is wriggling around but Shogun manages to pass to half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Shogun decides to stand and escape the position.
Rivas swats away the attempt to clinch by Shogun.

Shogun manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Rivas on his heels. He'll look to pass Rivas's guard now, I'm sure.
Shogun takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Shogun postures up in Rivas's guard and throws a big left but Rivas blocks it.
Rivas keeping moving, preventing Shogun from controlling successfully.
Rivas working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Shogun.
Rivas wants to stand up but Shogun is controlling him.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Rivas has his feet on Shogun's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Rivas keeps the fight on the outside.

Rivas closes the distance and pushes Shogun back into the cage.
Rivas has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Shogun is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Rivas tries to pull guard but Shogun forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Shogun successfully pulls guard.
Shogun trying to keep a closed guard but Rivas is proving a slippery customer.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Rivas wants to get up but he can't break Shogun's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

And that's the end of the fight!
Lyoto Shogun comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Shogun winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
