With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mike Penner!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penner moves in looking to clinch but Nikiel pushes him off.
Nikiel rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Penner moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Nice takedown defense from Nikiel. No joy for Penner on that attempt.

Mariusz Nikiel seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Penner fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Penner blocks a head kick by Nikiel.
Penner uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Nikiel.
Nikiel tries to bum rush Penner with a series of wild strikes but Penner uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Penner tries to clinch up but Nikiel circles away and keeps his distance.
Nikiel throws a series of punches but Penner avoids them all with ease.
Penner steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Nikiel.

Horrible takedown attempt by Penner or perhaps it was just good defense by Nikiel, which made it look bad.
Nikiel is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Penner.

Penner closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Penner lands in his opponent's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Penner is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Nikiel is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Nikiel has escaped and now he's on top!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Penner is looking to stand up but Nikiel isn't so interested in that idea.

Penner is trying to control the position but Nikiel postures up.
Nikiel lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Nikiel throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Penner works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Nikiel got a little sloppy there for a moment and Penner has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Nikiel has managed to get both his arms back between Penner's legs - danger averted.
Nikiel lands a couple of elbows.
Nikiel is working Penner over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
