PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Marco Polo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joe Madison (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Polo comes into the arena with On The Floor blaring out of the sound system. Joe Madison told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Marco Polo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Joe Madison!
The judges for this bout are Josh West, Roger Salmon and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Polo stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Polo wants it to stay on the feet.
Polo keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Madison takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Horrible takedown attempt by Madison or perhaps it was just good defense by Polo, which made it look bad.
Marco Polo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joe Madison.
Polo swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Madison.
Polo connects with a leg kick. Madison looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
Polo tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Madison defends well and Polo ends up having to push Madison into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Madison is defended easily by Polo.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Madison tries to keep at a distance but Polo has taken the fight into the clinch.

The referee is keeping an eye on Polo - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.

Polo breaks the clinch.
Polo buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Polo stuffs the takedown attempt from Madison. Madison gets slowly back to his feet.

Madison closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Polo quickly recovers to half guard.

Madison is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Polo is looking for a sweep. Madison is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Madison seems to be working for a kimura but Polo defends the submission attempt.

Madison looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Madison is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Madison is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Polo still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Polo has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!
Madison is looking to reverse the position.

Polo wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Madison, who protects the arm well.

Polo decides to stand up, so the ref orders Madison to his feet.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Polo.

Madison shoots and misses
and Polo cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Madison enables Polo to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Madison manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Polo wants to lay and pray for a moment but Madison keeps working.

Polo is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Madison makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Madison.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Marco Polo dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Polo gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Polo gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Madison.
Madison is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Polo is defending well.
Polo is pressed up against the cage. Madison has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Polo down to the mat. Polo avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Madison is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Polo pulls his head out easily.
We've been hearing good reports from Polo's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Polo is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Polo's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.
Madison tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Madison bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Madison drops back looking for a submission - "I'm sorry sir, but I'm gunna break your leg" says Madison as he cranks on the unfortunate limb! Polo screams and taps out before any major damage is done! Don't mess with Madison! Nice submission victory there!
