Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Romulus Veres (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Arto Blomsten (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Veres kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Opeth / Hope Leaves. The key to victory for Romulus Veres has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 0 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Romulus Veres!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Arto Blomsten!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Steve Montenegro and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Blomsten connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Veres's hands.
Veres jabs Blomsten to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Blomsten doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Blomsten's jab looks to have found its range, popping Veres under the eye.
Blomsten connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
Blomsten scores with a leg kick.
Blomsten looks for a takedown but Veres sprawls well.
Arto Blomsten seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Blomsten misses with a body punch
and Veres counters with a nice uppercut.
Blomsten fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Veres manages to avoid it.
Veres fires out a quick counter leg kick but Blomsten just manages to avoid it.
We've been told by Veres's head coaches at Nyrkkipaja that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Veres lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Blomsten tries to land a body kick
and Veres counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Veres backing away here, and Blomsten unleashes a leg kick that just misses.

It looks like Arto Blomsten has been cut.

Decent striking displayed by Veres there.
Veres looks to land a left hand but Blomsten moved out of range nicely.
Blomsten takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.

Veres lands a nice looking body shot.
Blomsten shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Veres but Veres pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Blomsten uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Veres.

Blomsten darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Blomsten pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Blomsten doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Veres counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Blomsten thinking.
Romulus Veres has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Arto Blomsten.
Veres throws a hook to the side of Blomsten's head but Blomsten sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Veres misses with a low kick.
Blomsten wants to counter with a clinch but Veres pushes him away.
Veres punishes Blomsten's body with a nice straight punch.

and Veres counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.

and Blomsten counters with a single leg into guard. Veres didn't expect that.

Blomsten stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Veres swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Blomsten looking to sit in guard and control but Veres gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Blomsten tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Blomsten is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Veres is aware though and is defending well.
Blomsten wants to sweep here but Veres controlling him for the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Blomsten has control of Veres's left arm, preventing Veres from doing any damage.
Veres is stalling in the full guard.

Blomsten is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Blomsten is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Romulus Veres dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Arto Blomsten's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Blomsten connects with a good right hand that stumbles Veres. Veres circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Blomsten tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Veres defends well and Blomsten ends up having to push Veres into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Veres throws a low kick but Blomsten avoids it.
Veres throws a body shot but no joy.
Veres lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Blomsten ducks under a wild hook from Veres.
Veres lands with a straight right. Blomsten didn't see that one coming.

Blomsten is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Veres's half guard.

Veres is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Blomsten stalling.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Veres moves into full guard.
Blomsten trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Blomsten's corner is telling him to maintain position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Veres takes one to the chin there.
Blomsten finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Veres lands with a nice body kick.
Blomsten walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Veres checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.

Blomsten uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Veres.
Blomsten is looking to slow Veres down with leg kicks.
Blomsten connects with a solid leg kick.
Veres looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Blomsten walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Blomsten takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.

Blomsten dives in and scores a takedown into Veres's guard.

Let's hope that Blomsten has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Blomsten is looking to pass into half guard but Veres pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Veres is in guard.

That was a close second round but I would say that Romulus Veres will probably get the nod.

Blomsten closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Veres wants to improve his position but Blomsten is controlling well.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Blomsten throwing strikes but Veres manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
Blomsten tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Veres wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Veres gets to mount! Blomsten was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
Blomsten is hanging on here. He's in a desperate position.
Blomsten tries to lock up and control but Veres gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Blomsten has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.

Veres controlling the position easily from mount.
Veres with some aggressive grappling here, looking for the finish.

Blomsten manages to regain half guard. Good work.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Blomsten is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Veres's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Veres's back!

Veres is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Blomsten gets his way!

Arto Blomsten comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Veres has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
