PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ichabod Crane (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lord Viceroy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Crane kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Broken Bones - Decapitated. Lord Viceroy has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Ichabod Crane's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ichabod Crane!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Lord Viceroy!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Crane gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Crane misses with a short punch on the inside.
Crane jumps guard but Viceroy turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Crane has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Crane struggles to land a body shot inside as Viceroy controls his hands.
Crane tries a body shot but Viceroy blocks it.

Crane manages to pull guard.

Crane has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Viceroy can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Crane is trying to keep Viceroy in close.
Viceroy must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Crane looking for a sweep. Not yet Crane, not yet.

Crane has his foot on Viceroy's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Viceroy works his way back into a safe position though.

Crane is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Crane wants to improve his position but Viceroy is controlling well.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Viceroy throws a right hand that misses

and Crane counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Crane throwing strikes but missing.
Crane throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Viceroy works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Crane missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Crane working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Crane trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Viceroy manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

Crane throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.

Crane is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Viceroy wanted to stand there but Crane had control of the position.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Crane seems keen to control Viceroy's posture.
Crane is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Crane is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Crane wants to control but Viceroy is keeping him busy.

Crane is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Viceroy has managed to free his arm - good work.
Viceroy wants to control but Crane is keeping busy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ichabod Crane dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Viceroy connects with a looping right hand.
Viceroy punishes Crane's body with a nice straight punch.
Crane scores with a sloppy right hand. Viceroy should have avoided that one.
Viceroy takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Viceroy throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Viceroy misses with a hook.
Viceroy takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Crane keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
A punch lands to the side of Crane 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Viceroy looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

Crane has taken the fight to the clinch.
Viceroy wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Crane has him pressed against the cage.
Viceroy gets underhooks to prevent Crane's takedown attempt.
Crane jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Viceroy walks away with a smile on his face. Crane gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Viceroy throws a right and a left that both miss.

and Crane counters with a single leg into guard. Viceroy didn't expect that.
Crane controlling from the top position.
Crane working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Crane keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Viceroy's head.
Crane wants to pass the guard but Viceroy is keeping the position.
Crane loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Viceroy avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Crane engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Crane darts in and clinches Viceroy up against the cage.
Crane is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Viceroy to keep the fight standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ichabod Crane. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Viceroy escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Viceroy ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Crane moves away.

and Crane counters with a shoot takedown. Viceroy fights it but they end up in guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Crane looking to sit in guard and control but Viceroy gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


Crane had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Viceroy defends it easily.

Crane has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Viceroy is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Crane.
Viceroy tries to get to his feet but Crane is in the middle of advancing position himself and ends up with Viceroy in his guard.

Viceroy avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Viceroy got a little sloppy there for a moment and Crane has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Viceroy has managed to get both his arms back between Crane's legs - danger averted.
Crane is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Crane controls Viceroy momentarily but Viceroy frees himself.

Crane moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Viceroy scores with a jab to the head.

Crane tries to close the distance and clinch but Viceroy swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Viceroy throws a right hand that Crane ducks under and follows up with a left that Crane also avoids with ease.
Crane is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Viceroy.
Lord Viceroy seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Crane walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Crane appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Viceroy will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Crane thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Crane sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Viceroy is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

The ground and pound from Crane seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

Crane looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Viceroy avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Crane.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Crane throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Viceroy works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.

That was a close round but Ichabod Crane did the better work so I'd imagine he'll take it.
