PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Roland Clements (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kundi Sulemani (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Roland Clements!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kundi Sulemani!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Chris Dean and Summer Carpenter.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sulemani with a lazy takedown attempt

and Clements counters by moving into the clinch.
Sulemani can't get the takedown.

Clements decides to pull guard.
Clements preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sulemani engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Clements really is a fat lump.
Clements wants to sweep but no luck.
Sulemani prevents Clements from getting back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sulemani is on the wrong end of a couple of strikes there.
Clements is trying to control the position from the bottom.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Clements wants to sweep but no luck.
Clements wants to stand up but Sulemani is controlling him.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Clements gets caught napping as Sulemani dives in and scores a takedown. Clements manages to retain guard.
Clements trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

Clements is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Clements working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sulemani doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sulemani manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Clements wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Sulemani manages to pass to side control.
Sulemani lands strikes from half guard.
Sulemani is controlling the pace.
It looks like Sulemani might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Sulemani's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Clements wants to control but Sulemani is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Sulemani slips a nice elbow through Clements's hands, connecting with Clements's forehead.
Clements keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Clements wants to get back to his feet.

Sulemani is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Clements is not content to let Sulemani control the position.
Clements is looking to escape.
Clements might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Sulemani thows a huge punch but Clements dodges it nicely.

Sulemani looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Sulemani wants to lay and pray for a moment but Clements keeps working.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Sulemani might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Clements haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Sulemani rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Clements moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Clements shoots in but Sulemani avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Sulemani throws a counter combo.

Clements gets the takedown into side control.
Sulemani wants to control but Clements postures up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Clements tries to stand but Sulemani is controlling his head.
Sulemani is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Clements off and has taken his back!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kundi Sulemani dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Clements tries to clinch but Sulemani moves out of range.
Sulemani fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Clements manages to avoid it.

Sulemani clinches.
Sulemani jumps guard but Clements turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Sulemani wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Clements has him pressed against the cage.

Sulemani taking a breather.
Sulemani tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Clements smiles and moves away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Clements tries to close the distance and clinch but Sulemani swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Sulemani throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Clements tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Sulemani is in Clements's guard.
Sulemani wants to control from the top but Clements keeps moving.
Sulemani has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Sulemani prevents Clements from getting back to his feet.

Clements wants to sweep here but Sulemani controlling him for the moment.
Sulemani trying to control but Clements is working from the bottom.
Clements wants to stand and escape but Sulemani is having none of it.
Sulemani sitting in guard, not really doing much.

Clements looking for a guillotine here but Sulemani defends easily.
Clements is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Sulemani is controlling him.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Kundi Sulemani seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Sulemani throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Sulemani tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Roland Clements is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Clements changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Sulemani looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Sulemani tries to bench press Clements off him but Clements keeps the position.
Sulemani is breathing heavily.
Clements wants to stand but Sulemani is controlling his arm.
Sulemani is trying to get back to half guard.

Clements decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Clements moves out of range as Sulemani throws a body kick.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Clements has managed to clinch.
Sulemani tries to pull guard but Clements forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Roland Clements has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kundi Sulemani.
Sulemani looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

Sulemani pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Clements rushes Sulemani and presses him up against the cage.

Clements gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Well, if Clements is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Clements wants to stand up but Sulemani has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Clements in particular looking to stall.
Sulemani wants to improve his position but Clements is controlling well.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Sulemani slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Clements is looking to stand up but Sulemani won't let him.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Roland Clements will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!



Sulemani clinches up against the cage.
Sulemani is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Sulemani is looking to control Clements's arms but Clements gets an underhook and turns him. Now Sulemani has his back to the cage.

Clements gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Sulemani regains guard.
Clements prevents Sulemani from getting back to his feet.
Sulemani looking to hit a scissor sweep but Clements is one step ahead there.
Sulemani trying to keep a closed guard but Clements is proving a slippery customer.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Clements is looking to work some ground and pound but Sulemani has wrist control.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Clements wanted to stand there but Sulemani had control of the position.
Clements cracks Sulemani with a solid left hand.
Sulemani is looking to sweep but instead, Clements has passed into half guard.
Clements is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Clements really is built like a bowling ball. I wonder if he'd roll if you pushed him down a hill...
Sulemani gets full guard.
Clements would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Clements has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Sulemani throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
It looked like Clements was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Sulemani leaves Clements with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Sulemani is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Clements's half guard.
Sulemani takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Clements wants to stand back up but Sulemani manages to pass into side control.

Sulemani stands up.
Clements slaps away a takedown attempt from Sulemani, before circling back to the center of the mat.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Clements clinches.

Clements drags the fight down to the ground.
Sulemani is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Sulemani got a little sloppy there for a moment and Clements has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Sulemani has managed to get both his arms back between Clements's legs - danger averted.
Clements wants to get back to his feet but Sulemani passes into half guard.
Sulemani seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Clements does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Clements is trying to get back to full guard.
Clements tries to kick Sulemani off but Sulemani keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Clements tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Sulemani manages to move to mount!
Sulemani looking to finish Clements with some ground and pound. This is bad for Clements!
Clements working to try and regain half guard.
Sulemani takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Clements wants to get back to his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kundi Sulemani comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Sulemani has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
