PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Christopher Newton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mauricio Calvancante (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Newton comes to the ring accompanied by She Knows. Mauricio Calvancante told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Christopher Newton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mauricio Calvancante!
The judges for this bout are Radbod Blank, Patrick Alders and Saam Ante.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

We've been told by Newton's head coaches at Pahuyuth Muay Thai 12 elite coaches that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Christopher Newton has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mauricio Calvancante.

Calvancante gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Newton breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Calvancante changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Newton tries to avoid it but Calvancante manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Newton to the ground. Newton escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Calvancante throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Newton's waist but Newton gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Calvancante off to one side.

Calvancante feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Calvancante wants to pass the guard but Newton is keeping the position.

Calvancante drops back, looking for a kneebar! Newton looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Newton looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Newton!

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Calvancante got a little sloppy there for a moment and Newton has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Calvancante has managed to get both his arms back between Newton's legs - danger averted.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
