PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Charley Short (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Zehri Umrani (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Zehri Umrani!
The judges for this bout are Ben Watson, Francis DeMontford and Steve Erwin.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Umrani looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Umrani leaves Short with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Short really is a fat lump.
Short avoids the head kick by Umrani.

Umrani has managed to clinch.

Umrani's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Short slips a jab and a cross from Umrani.
Umrani throws a series of punches but Short moves out of range.
Short changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.

Short wants to clinch up but Umrani keeps it at a distance.

Short has Umrani up against the cage in a clinch.

Umrani breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Short moves out of range of the body kick.
Umrani slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Zehri Umrani seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Short shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Umrani pinned against the cage. Umrani gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Umrani wants to clinch.

Umrani doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Short counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Umrani isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Short stacks Umrani on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Short!

Umrani is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Short asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Umrani is trying to control Short's posture but Short avoids it.
Umrani takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Umrani is looking for a sweep.
Short throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

That was a close round but I would say that Charley Short will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Umrani is breathing heavily.
Umrani moves forwards but Short connects with a nice, crisp jab.

Umrani decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Umrani seems to be working for a kimura but Short defends the submission attempt.

Umrani moves in looking to clinch but Short pushes him off.
Horrible takedown attempt by Umrani or perhaps it was just good defense by Short, which made it look bad.
Short shoots in but no luck this time.
Short misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

and Short makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
