PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Carl Sheppards (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Better Dead (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Dead is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Better off Dead. Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Carl Sheppards!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Better Dead!
The judges for this bout are David Hoff, Michael Johnstone and Dirk Anderson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sheppards moves into the clinch.
Sheppards goes for a takedown in the clinch but Dead prevents it.
Sheppards tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Sheppards pulls guard effortlessly.

Sheppards is looking for a triangle but Dead pushes his legs off easily.
Dead won't allow Sheppards to sweep him here.
Dead pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Sheppards is keeping the position for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sheppards looking to hit a scissor sweep but Dead is one step ahead there.
Sheppards trying to control the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Dead is looking to pass into half guard but Sheppards pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Sheppards is in guard.

Sheppards trying to control but Dead is working from the bottom.

Sheppards drops back, looking for a kneebar! Dead looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Dead looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Dead!


That's one minute gone in the round.

Dead goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Sheppards has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Dead but great work by Sheppards.

Sheppards is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Dead looks calm but he's in trouble here. Sheppards gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Dead is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Sheppards lets go of the hold and Dead can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:40 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Carl Sheppards!
After the fight, Carl Sheppards was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
The defeated Better Dead had this to say: 'I was a little off today...o.k. I'm always a little off.'.
