PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Martin Hewitt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Renato Cardoso (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cardoso comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Samba de Janeiro kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Martin Hewitt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Renato Cardoso!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Steve Smith and William Peck.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hewitt throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Cardoso tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Hewitt is in Cardoso's guard.
Cardoso controls Hewitt momentarily but Hewitt frees himself.
Hewitt trying to control but Cardoso is working from the bottom.
Hewitt pushing down on Cardoso's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Cardoso is trying to get back to full guard.
Cardoso moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Hewitt looking to pass the guard.

Cardoso is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Hewitt is aware though and is defending well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Cardoso has an active guard here but Hewitt has managed to pass into half guard.

Hewitt is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Cardoso defends it well.

Hewitt wants to work for an arm triangle but Cardoso is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Hewitt is working for a submission of some sort.
The fighters are battling for position here. Cardoso manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Hewitt trying to control the position from guard on top but Cardoso is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Hewitt postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Hewitt stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cardoso swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Cardoso looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Hewitt with a nice head shot there.

Hewitt drops back looking for a leg! Cardoso is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Cardoso manages to kick Hewitt off! Hewitt jumps back into Cardoso's guard.

Hewitt thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Hewitt avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Hewitt postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Hewitt forces his way into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hewitt is just content to waste time from the top position. Cardoso takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Hewitt trying to control but Cardoso is working from the bottom.

Hewitt advances to half guard.

Hewitt looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Hewitt passes to full mount!
Cardoso is squirming around, avoiding Hewitt's attempts to control the action.
Cardoso tries to get back to half guard but can't.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Cardoso regains half guard.
Hewitt is trying to control. Cardoso wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Cardoso works his way to full guard. Good work.
Hewitt slips nicely into half guard.
Cardoso wants to get back to full guard.

Hewitt is looking for a kimura here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Hewitt seems to be working for a kimura but Cardoso defends the submission attempt.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Martin Hewitt dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Hewitt drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Cardoso gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
Cardoso is in a horrible position here. Hewitt smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Cardoso takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Hewitt looking to finish Cardoso with some ground and pound. This is bad for Cardoso!

Hewitt looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Cardoso is wriggling around trying to escape.
Hewitt punishing his opponent with strikes.

Cardoso is looking to improve his position but Hewitt isn't that keen on the idea.
Hewitt looking to control but Cardoso is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Hewitt is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Cardoso can do to turn this around?

Hewitt looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

Hewitt with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Cardoso really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

Hewitt is working to isolate an arm here. It's a telegraphed submission attempt but he's gone for it anyway - and he's got it! Hewitt extends the arm and Cardoso is forced to tap!
