PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Lil Jon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marcin Sokol (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sokol has chosen DMX - X gon' give it to Ya as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Marcin Sokol will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 9 - 0, fighting out of New York, Lil Jon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Marcin Sokol!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Steve Montenegro and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jon misses with an uppercut. Sokol saw that one coming.
Jon has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Midnight MMA in the buildup to the fight.
Sokol looks to score with a jab to the body but Jon is just out of range.

Sokol gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Jon to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Jon postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Jon missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Jon stands and throws Sokol's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Jon is looking to take a break and control but Sokol is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sokol is trying to control Jon's posture but Jon avoids it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Sokol is looking to regain half guard here but Jon keeps moving and retains side control.

Jon is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Sokol is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Sokol is looking for a sweep.
Jon lands an elbow.
Jon has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Sokol dodges the ground and pound from Jon.
Jon postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Jon fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Sokol is not content to let Jon control the position.

Sloppy strikes there by Jon.
Jon working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.

Jon working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Jon wants to control but Sokol is keeping him busy.

Jon cracks Sokol with a big elbow.
Sokol tries to improve position but can't.

Jon wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Sokol, who protects the arm well.

Jon is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Sokol knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Sokol gets back to half guard.

Jon thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Sokol is staying active underneath Jon, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Jon not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Sokol gets back to full guard.
Sokol controls Jon momentarily but Jon frees himself.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lil Jon dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Jon walks into a left hand.
Jon fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Sokol! But no joy.
Sokol leaves Jon with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
A solid body kick from Sokol.
Jon with a poor takedown
and Sokol counters with a left to the body.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lil Jon. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Jon fails with the takedown.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jon shoots in looking for a takedown. Sokol tries to sprawl out of it but Jon keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Sokol manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Jon ducks right into an uppercut from Sokol.

Sokol misses with the combination.
Jon tries to counter with a takedown but Sokol is quick to defend against it.
Sokol scores with a jab to the head.
A chopping leg kick lands by Sokol.
Jon throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Sokol lands a leg kick that knocks Jon off balance momentarily.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Jon.
Sokol looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Jon moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
The fighters circle momentarily. Sokol darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sokol lands a lovely overhand right.
Jon shoots in looking for a takedown but Sokol manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Jon's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Jon gets the takedown into side control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
You can see the frustration on Sokol's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Sokol felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Jon tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.

The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Marcin Sokol showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Sokol lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Jon is trying hard to land a takedown here. Sokol sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Jon jabs Sokol to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Jon tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Sokol defends well and Jon ends up having to push Sokol into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Sokol wants to counter the offense by Jon and move into the clinch position.

Sokol is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.

Jon attempts a counter takedown but Sokol avoids it well and moves away.

Sokol lets loose with a powerful body kick. Jon will feel that in the morning.
Horrible takedown attempt by Jon or perhaps it was just good defense by Sokol, which made it look bad.
Despite the aggression on Sokol's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Jon darts in looking for a takedown but Sokol gets double underhooks and turns Jon into the cage.

Marcin Sokol is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
A solid leg kick lands there for Sokol.
Jon has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Jon there as he acknowledges the shot.
Jon dives in and grabs Sokol's left leg, looking for a takedown. Sokol pushes down on Jon's head and hops out.
Sokol replies with a solid counter kick to the body but Jon blocks it well.
Sokol works the jab nicely.
Sokol connects with a nice looking jab.
Sokol connects with a body shot that sends Jon's belly button to the back.
Sokol throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.
Sokol thuds his right hand into Jon's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Marcin Sokol seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Jon circles away from the clinch attempt.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Sokol fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Jon, pushing him back against the cage.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Jon.
Sokol stops a takedown attempt from Jon.
Sokol gets underhooks to prevent Jon's takedown attempt.
Sokol lands an uppercut.
Jon has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Sokol is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Sokol misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Jon is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Sokol is defending well.
Sokol lands with a right to the head.
Jon is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Sokol pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Sokol lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Sokol gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Jon.
Jon has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Sokol after a bit of a struggle.
A right hook to the body lands for Sokol.
Sokol lands with a short punch from the clinch.

Sokol can't find room to land a body shot as Jon controls the action.
Sokol gets through Jon's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
Sokol misses with some punches.
Sokol has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Jon goes for a takedown attempt but Sokol pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Jon avoids a punch combination nicely.
Jon drops down looking for a counter takedown but Sokol sprawls and moves away.
Jon sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Sokol lands with a kick to the ribs.
Jon has a takedown stuffed.

Lil Jon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Sokol works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Sokol keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Jon shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Sokol defends it nicely.

And that's the end of the fight!
Marcin Sokol comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Sokol has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
