PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jordan James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Frederick (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Paul Frederick will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jordan James!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Paul Frederick!
The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, John Kavanagh and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
James leaves Frederick with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
No luck with that takedown attempt from James.
Frederick is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Frederick gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and James counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Frederick has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. James is working away from the top position though.
Frederick pushes James off looking to stand but James dives back in and keeps control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Frederick desperately trying to maintain half guard.
Frederick wants to control but James is keeping busy.

Frederick is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Frederick is trying to maintain the position but James is very close to passing his half guard.

Frederick has one foot on James's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
James fails with a takedown attempt.
Frederick tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but James paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Frederick displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from James.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jordan James. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Frederick shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has James pinned against the cage. James gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Frederick tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but James swivels and escapes.
James changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Frederick is defended easily by James.
James shoots for a double leg takedown but Frederick sprawls well. He's pushed James's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Frederick rushes James and presses him up against the cage.
Frederick is trying to pull guard but James turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

James pulls guard successfully.
James wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Frederick is looking to stand up but James won't let him.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Frederick's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

There's a bit of a scramble here and now James is on top in guard.


The fighters are working up against the cage. Frederick manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
James slowing the pace effectively.

James has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Frederick uses from the top position.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
James tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Frederick paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Frederick shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with James but James pushes him off and we're back to square one.
James changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
James has been working on his balance at Morbid Conditioning, Trans, Esc School $1000, so perhaps that has help him stuff some of the takedown attempts by Frederick.
James circles away from the clinch attempt.
James slaps away a takedown attempt from Frederick, before circling back to the center of the mat.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Frederick fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with James, pushing him back against the cage.

James jumps guard and drags Frederick to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Frederick postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Frederick wants to clinch up but James keeps it at a distance.
James shoots and misses

and Frederick moves into the clinch.
Frederick lands a hook to the side of the head.
James gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Frederick.

James successfully pulls guard.
Frederick wants to control from the top but James keeps moving.

James escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Frederick gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


James dives in and grabs Frederick's left leg, looking for a takedown. Frederick pushes down on James's head and hops out.
A nice side step and Frederick releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Frederick is defended easily by James.
Horrible takedown attempt by Frederick or perhaps it was just good defense by James, which made it look bad.
James feinted with a counter takedown.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as James accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Frederick wants to lay and pray for a moment but James keeps working.
James has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Frederick is working away from the top position though.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Frederick is taking a breather. James says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

James makes his way to full guard. A much better position for James.

James shoots in for a double leg but Frederick sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Frederick darts in looking for a takedown but James gets double underhooks and turns Frederick into the cage.
James closes this distance looking for a takedown but Frederick circles away.

Frederick has taken the fight to the clinch.
Frederick is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
James prevents the takedown attempt.
Paul Frederick has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Frederick is trying to drag James to the mat but James just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Frederick tries to pull guard but James forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Frederick has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed James clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
James is trying to break free.
Oooh a big shot gets through from Frederick. Many more shots like that and the referee will have to think about stepping in!
James trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Frederick connects with a series of strikes and the referee is calling for James to escape the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Frederick lands punches and elbows.
Jordan James is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Frederick has his opponent trapped and is landing shots. Not a good position for James.


James is rocked!

And that's the end of the fight!
Paul Frederick comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think James has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
