PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kevin Gaarlandt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Thiago Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gracie has chosen 9pm (Till I Come) as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Kevin Gaarlandt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Thiago Gracie!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Nard Betker and Patrick Alders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gracie uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Gaarlandt.
Gracie displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Gaarlandt throws out the jab.
Gracie throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Gaarlandt sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Gaarlandt swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Gaarlandt throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Gracie connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Gracie has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Gaarlandt finds it's way round the side to connect with Gracie's head.
Gracie looks to throw the jab but Gaarlandt is out of range.
Gaarlandt keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Gracie throws an overhand right that lands on Gaarlandt's shoulder, as Gaarlandt tries to avoid the shot.
Gaarlandt tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Gracie was well out of range. Poor timing from Gaarlandt.
Gaarlandt misses with a jab to the body
and Gracie counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Gracie throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Gaarlandt was covering up waiting for the punch and Gracie finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Gaarlandt seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Gaarlandt looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gaarlandt is looking to stand up but Gracie isn't so interested in that idea.
Gaarlandt is trying to keep Gracie in close.
Gracie throwing strikes from guard but Gaarlandt blocks nicely.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gracie controls from within his opponent's guard.

Gaarlandt is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Gracie defends well.
Gaarlandt is trying to hold Gracie in close to prevent damage but Gracie has managed to pass into half guard.
Gaarlandt is trying to control but can't.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Gaarlandt is trying to stand back up but Gracie is controlling him
Gracie trying to control the pace.
Gracie thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Gaarlandt's head.
Gracie working the head and body with strikes.
Gaarlandt is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Gracie's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Gracie's back!
Gracie rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Gracie is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Gracie punching from the bottom.
Gracie slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gracie thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Gracie keeping moving, preventing Gaarlandt from controlling successfully.
Gaarlandt stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gracie swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Gracie looking for a sweep. Not yet Gracie, not yet.
Gaarlandt controlling from the top position.

Gaarlandt drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Gaarlandt jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Gaarlandt trying to control but Gracie is working from the bottom.
Gracie bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Gaarlandt's guard.


Gracie is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gaarlandt keeping moving, preventing Gracie from controlling successfully.

Gaarlandt has his foot on Gracie's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Gracie works his way back into a safe position though.

Gracie trying to control the position from guard on top but Gaarlandt is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Gaarlandt has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Gracie can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Gaarlandt is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Gracie is controlling him.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Thiago Gracie dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


A looping hook to the body misses from Gracie. Gaarlandt does a little dance to reset his feet.
Gracie misses with a wild body shot.
Gracie throws a right and a left that both miss.
Gracie fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Gracie throws a shot from downtown. Gaarlandt moves away and avoids it.
Gaarlandt closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Gaarlandt throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Gaarlandt misses the shot to the body.
Gracie has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Gracie displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Gaarlandt throws out the jab.
Gaarlandt throws a jab when Gracie was well out of range.
Gaarlandt gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Gracie.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Gracie pushes Gaarlandt up against the cage in a clinch.
Gracie working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely.
Gaarlandt jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Gracie walks away with a smile on his face. Gaarlandt gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Gracie moves into range and clinches up with Gaarlandt.
Gaarlandt tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Gracie just stands there and leans against the cage.

Gracie works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Gracie working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Gracie postures up in Gaarlandt's guard and throws a big left but Gaarlandt blocks it.
Gracie scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

Gaarlandt had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Gracie defends it easily.
Gaarlandt controls Gracie momentarily but Gracie frees himself.

Gaarlandt looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gracie with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Gaarlandt has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Gracie doesn't defend quickly enough and Gaarlandt has managed to lock this one up! Can Gracie escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Gaarlandt on a fantastic submission victory.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:29 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Kevin Gaarlandt!
Kevin Gaarlandt decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
