PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ted Grant (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ravel Marques (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Grant comes to the cage accompanied by Set A Fire. Marques has chosen Slipknot - Before I Forget as his entrance music. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ted Grant!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ravel Marques!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Micheangelo Fripello and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Grant looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Marques is fending him off so far but Grant persists. Nope, Marques circles away and we're back to standing.
Marques throws a body kick that misses.

Grant closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Marques quickly recovers to half guard.
Marques trying to control here.

Grant escapes and gets back to his feet.
Marques throws a lazy head kick
and Grant counters with a two punch combo.
Grant blocks a head kick by Marques.
Grant tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Marques manages to circle out of the way.
Marques throws a body kick despite being completely out of range

and Grant counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Grant stands up from half guard.

Grant looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Marques!

Grant has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Ravel Marques is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Grant takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?

Grant closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Grant lands in his opponent's guard.
Grant missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Grant is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Grant gets to his feet - Marques follows without any prompting.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Grant gets a takedown into half guard.
Grant moves nicely into side control.
Sloppy strikes there by Grant.
Marques tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Grant wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Marques on the wrong end of some ground and pound.

Grant decides to stand back up.
Grant tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Marques defends well and Grant ends up having to push Marques into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Marques throws a head kick that misses
and Grant counters with a straight right hand.
Marques scores with a head kick. Grant tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.
Marques throws a lazy head kick
and Grant counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Marques thinking.
Marques misses with a low kick.
A little feinted left hand from Grant on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Marques is looking to clinch but Grant is avoiding it.
Grant moves out of range of the body kick from Marques.

Grant throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Marques tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Grant is in Marques's guard.

Grant thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Marques looks winded!

Grant stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Grant feints and as Marques raises his hands in defense, Grant changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Grant is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Grant accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Grant stands up from Marques's guard - Grant perhaps looking for a knockout.
Grant shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Marques as he jumps to the side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ted Grant. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Grant blocks a leg kick.
Grant shoots for a double leg takedown but Marques sprawls well. He's pushed Grant's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Marques looks to throw a body kick
and Grant counters with a three punch combo that has Marques backing up. Marques nods at Grant to acknowledge the strikes.

The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Grant closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Marques's guard.
Grant throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Marques works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Marques utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Grant postures up in Marques's guard and throws a big left but Marques blocks it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ted Grant dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!


Marques defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Grant.
Grant looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Marques throws a head kick that half lands.
We've been informed that Marques has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Grant moves out of range as Marques throws a body kick.
Grant has a takedown stuffed.
Marques changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Marques looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Marques throws the kick towards the body but Grant avoids it.
Nice sprawl there from Marques as Grant shoots in.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Grant will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Grant fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Marques to the ground. Grant is now in Marques's guard.

Grant gets to his feet - Marques follows without any prompting.
Grant shoots in but no luck this time.
A head kick misses from Marques.
Marques throws a body kick, spinning off balance

and Grant decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Marques's guard.
Grant missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Grant is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Marques can do to turn this around?
Marques is breathing heavily.
Grant working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Marques avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Grant stands and steps away. Marques gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Marques tries to land a leg kick but Grant saw it coming and moves away.
Grant tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Marques swivels and escapes.
A head kick misses from Marques.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Marques keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Ravel Marques seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Grant shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Marques napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Marques on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Grant in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Marques really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Grant. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Marques is working to avoid the ground and pound but Grant connects with a decent elbow.

Grant decides to stand back up. Grant steps back and let's Marques get back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Grant dives in and grabs Marques's left leg, looking for a takedown. Marques pushes down on Grant's head and hops out.
Marques throws a head kick that misses

and Grant counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Grant moves nicely into side control.
Marques taking a bit of punishment here - Grant scoring with strikes.


Marques is rocked!
Grant cracks Marques with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Marques is still in real trouble! Can Grant finish him?
Grant cracks Marques with a big elbow. Oh, he's hurt! Grant immediately mounts and start dropping bombs! Marques is done! The referee jumps in and saves him from any more punishment - a quick and decisive finish by Grant!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:53 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Ted Grant!
During a confident post fight interview, Ted Grant thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
