PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Oswaldo Barrera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hikaru Kawagishi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hikaru Kawagishi will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Oswaldo Barrera!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Hikaru Kawagishi!
The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kawagishi does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Barrera tries to score a power double leg takedown but Kawagishi sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Barrera somewhat.
Kawagishi misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Kawagishi tries for a takedown but Barrera sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
As Kawagishi tries to get set, Barrera tries to push him back and clinch up but Kawagishi manages to avoid the attempt.
Barrera shoots in for a double leg but Kawagishi sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Barrera throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Kawagishi's waist but Kawagishi gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Barrera off to one side.
Kawagishi lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Oswaldo Barrera. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Barrera has managed to clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kawagishi breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Kawagishi fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Kawagishi gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Barrera to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Barrera could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Kawagishi wants to sweep but no luck.
Barrera engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Horrible takedown attempt by Kawagishi or perhaps it was just good defense by Barrera, which made it look bad.
Barrera tries to clinch but Kawagishi moves out of range.
Kawagishi unleashes a big counter combination but Barrera bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.

Barrera shoots in and gets a takedown into Kawagishi's guard.
Kawagishi is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Barrera is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Kawagishi is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

That was a close round but I would say that Oswaldo Barrera will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Barrera fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Kawagishi avoids it really well and circles away.

Barrera is wriggling around but Kawagishi manages to pass to half guard.

Kawagishi moves nicely into side control.
Barrera is trying to get back to his feet.
Kawagishi is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Barrera will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Barrera is trying to control Kawagishi's posture but Kawagishi avoids it.

Barrera throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!
No luck for Barrera with that takedown attempt.

Kawagishi throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Barrera was covering up waiting for the punch and Kawagishi finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Kawagishi stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Barrera swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Kawagishi controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Kawagishi wants to get up but he can't break Barrera's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Hikaru Kawagishi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Kawagishi dives in and grabs Barrera's left leg, looking for a takedown. Barrera pushes down on Kawagishi's head and hops out.

Barrera can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Kawagishi is looking to escape.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Kawagishi is desperately trying to improve his position but Barrera has a good base and remains in mount.
Barrera tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
