Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between John Sullivan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Eric Staal (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Sullivan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Eric Staal!
The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, Jonathan Paton and Bruno Lombardi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sullivan looks for a takedown but Staal sprawls well.
Staal is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
Sullivan avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Staal looks for the body kick but Sullivan saw that one coming.
Sullivan throws a big counter combination but Staal scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Staal throws a leg kick but Sullivan moved away.
Staal throws a leg kick that is checked

and Sullivan counters by moving into the clinch.
A head punch on the inside from Staal fails to land.
Staal tries to break the clinch but Sullivan is controlling the position.

Staal escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Sullivan scores with a takedown into Staal's guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sullivan working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Sullivan has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Staal is desperately trying to improve his position but Sullivan has a good base and remains in mount.
Staal is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.

Sullivan has control of Staal's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Staal regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Sullivan wants to finish this one by submission but Staal is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Sullivan.

Staal is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Staal sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Sullivan takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Sullivan has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Sullivan thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Still in half guard, Sullivan seems content to control.

Sullivan is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Staal sees it coming and defends easily.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Sullivan checks the leg kick.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Staal lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Sullivan has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Sullivan and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Sullivan attempts a counter takedown but Staal avoids it well and moves away.

Sullivan fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Staal, pushing him back against the cage.
Sullivan wants to break free but Staal has control.
Staal is trying to stall.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Staal.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Staal is looking to break free of the clinch but Sullivan has double underhooks.

Sullivan ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Sullivan no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Sullivan has his foot on Staal's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Staal works his way back into a safe position though.
Sullivan is pulling down on Staal's head to control his posture.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Sullivan pushes Staal off and gets back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Staal wants to slow Sullivan down by chopping away at his legs.
Staal takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Staal scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Staal fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Sullivan checks it well.
John Sullivan is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Sullivan blocks a head kick by Staal.
Staal pivots, looking for a leg kick but Sullivan is out of range and Staal settles back down.
Sullivan looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Staal is fending him off so far but Sullivan persists. Nope, Staal circles away and we're back to standing.
A clash of legs there as Sullivan blocks the low kick.
Staal throws an off balance right hand
and Sullivan connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sullivan avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Staal throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Sullivan sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Staal cracks Sullivan with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Sullivan shoots for a double leg takedown but Staal sprawls well. He's pushed Sullivan's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Staal will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Staal throws a hook but Sullivan avoids it easily.
Sullivan went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Staal misses with a low kick.
Staal tries to score with a low kick but Sullivan moves his leg out of the way.
Staal throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Staal throws a push kick but Sullivan slaps the foot to one side.
Staal throws a leg kick that misses.
Sullivan tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Staal defends well and Sullivan ends up having to push Staal into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Sullivan. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sullivan tries to close the distance and clinch up but Staal swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Eric Staal seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Sullivan tries to pull guard but Staal forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Sullivan jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Staal walks away with a smile on his face. Sullivan gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Sullivan will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Sullivan tries to close the distance and clinch but Staal swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Eric Staal showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Staal walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Sullivan checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.

Sullivan tries to close the distance and clinch but Staal swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Sullivan feints a jab promting Staal to slip. Sullivan then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Staal slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.

Staal throws the kick towards the body but Sullivan avoids it.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Sullivan is defended easily by Staal.

Sullivan keeps the fight on the outside.
Sullivan tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Staal defends well and Sullivan ends up having to push Staal into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Staal displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Sullivan.
