PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Orpo Jokinen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kaheli Sonni (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jokinen kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Oops! I Did It Again by Children of Bodom. Sonni has chosen Chica as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Orpo Jokinen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 14 - 2, fighting out of Helsinki, Kaheli Sonni!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Dillan Fox and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sonni throws the left hand but Jokinen avoids the punch easily.
Sonni misses with a wild combination.
Jokinen tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Sonni paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Jokinen fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Sonni manages to avoid it.
Jokinen lands with a nice body kick.
Sonni throws a body shot but no joy.
Sonni lands a glancing blow to the side of Jokinen's head.
Sonni avoids the head kick by Jokinen.
Jokinen cracks Sonni with a right hand to the side of the head.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sonni moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Jokinen misses with a head kick.
Sonni with the counter takedown but Jokinen avoids it easily.
A decent looking cross lands there for Jokinen.
Jokinen throws a hook but Sonni blocks it.

A jab from Jokinen finds it's way through Sonni's defenses.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Sonni checks a leg kick.

and Jokinen cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

It looks like Kaheli Sonni has been cut.
Sonni avoids the head kick by Jokinen.
Sonni thows a left - swing and a miss!
Jokinen throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Sonni paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.

Sonni closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Jokinen's guard.
Sonni throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Jokinen works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Sonni is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Sonni tries to free his leg and advance position but Jokinen is retaining full guard.

Sonni tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Sonni ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Jokinen looks for a takedown but Sonni sprawls well.

Sonni swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Jokinen throws a sloppy head kick
and Sonni counters with a left to the body.
Sonni throws out a loose jab but Jokinen uses good head movement to avoid it.

Jokinen shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Sonni uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Jokinen.
Sonni closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.

and Sonni counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Sonni is looking to take a break and control but Jokinen is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Jokinen is looking to control Sonni's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Jokinen avoid being mounted?

Sonni frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Jokinen sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Sonni with the ground and pound but Jokinen uses the opportunity to regain guard.
Jokinen not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Sonni pushes down on Jokinen's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Sonni is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Jokinen shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Sonni manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Sonni is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Jokinen might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Jokinen is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Sonni sees it coming and defends easily.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Jokinen is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

Jokinen swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Sonni is now in Jokinen's guard. A big mistake from Jokinen there, giving up the dominant position!

Sonni is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Jokinen is just riding it out for now. Sonni eventually gives up the hold.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Jokinen is staying active underneath Sonni, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Jokinen is looking for a sweep. Sonni is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Sonni lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Jokinen is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

That was a close second round but I would say that Orpo Jokinen will probably get the nod.

and Sonni counters with a nice low kick that buckles Jokinen's knee momentarily.
Jokinen pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Jokinen moves out of range as Sonni strikes.
Sonni lands with a thumping leg kick.
Sonni throws a leg kick but Jokinen sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Jokinen looks for the body kick but Sonni saw that one coming.
Jokinen bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.

It looks like Jokinen has been trying to sharpen up his punching technique, as it looks crisper than last time we saw him.

Orpo Jokinen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Sonni feints and then cracks Jokinen's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Jokinen down.

Jokinen takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Jokinen scores with a one two! Sonni had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

and Sonni counters with a stiff right hand.
Sonni lands a nice hook to Jokinen's body. Jokinen takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Kaheli Sonni.
Well Sonni has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Kaheli Sonni seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
The defeated Orpo Jokinen had this to say: 'You know, I came into this fight with a bulging disk and a ugh, a cracked skull. I wanna see someone fight with a cracked skull. That's why I came into this fight with a black eye. Cause my skull is cracked right here.'.
