PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Darwin France (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Emmett Brown (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). France comes to the cage accompanied by bring me to life. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 32 - 13 - 0, fighting out of New York, Darwin France!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Emmett Brown!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Alec Ball and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
France throws a body shot but no joy.
France has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Mello MMA in the buildup to the fight.
Brown throws a leg kick which misses France's front leg but catches the back leg as France tries to avoid it.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from France is defended easily by Brown.
Brown on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
France blocks the body kick.
France fails with a takedown attempt.
Brown throws a shot from downtown. France moves away and avoids it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
France shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Brown counters with a straight right hand.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Darwin France. That's going to take a lot out of him.
France shoots in for a takedown but Brown shows good takedown defense.

and Brown counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps France thinking.
France misses with a straight left.
France really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

France swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.

Brown works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Brown throws out a leg kick but France moves out of range and Brown only half commits.
Brown throws an uppercut from half a mile away. France sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Emmett Brown seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Brown has closed the distance and engaged France in a clinch.

France pulls guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Brown postures up.

France has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Brown is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for France.
France parries the strikes from Brown easily there. Brown is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable France to escape.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
France tries to bench press Brown off him but Brown keeps the position.
Brown creates some space and throws a big elbow, but France sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

France tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Brown wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Brown lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Brown wants to control but France is keeping him busy.
Brown has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Masaru Fighting Systems II. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.
You can see the frustration on France's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Brown postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. France looks a forlorn figure.

Brown lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.

France bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Brown swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
France scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
France moves out of range of the leg kick from Brown.
France shoots in but no luck this time.
France misses with a hook. Brown ducked under it nicely.

France tries to counter with a takedown but Brown is quick to defend against it.

Brown has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

France has gone for a leg lock! Brown slips out almost immediately though and dives into France's guard.

France is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Brown is aware though and is defending well.
France wants to control the position but Brown says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.

Brown wants to work for an arm triangle but France is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

France is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Well, if Brown is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

France looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
France tries to roll over but Brown keeps him under control.
Brown not landing any meaningful shots this time.
France has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Brown is working away from the top position though.
France has hold of Brown's hands but Brown slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Brown passes the guard and advances to mount!
France is squirming around, avoiding Brown's attempts to control the action.

Brown manages to capitalize on a mistake by France to take his back!
Brown gets his hands free as France looks to control.
France prevents Brown from getting a body triangle.
France tries to break free.
France is keeping busy.
Brown punishes France with strikes from the back mount.

A bit of a pause in the action here. Brown controlling the positon.
France tries to escape but Brown has the hooks in and won't let him break free.

Brown is trying to stick to France's back but France is turning into Brown. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Brown's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by France.

France changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Brown looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

France is trying to work for a kimura but Brown is defending well.
France has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
France tries to control but Brown wriggling away.

France jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Brown is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Brown and France has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

France is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Brown has managed to free his arm - good work.
Brown has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. France is working away from the top position though.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Brown gets full guard.
Brown wants to control the position but France says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Brown is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Brown won't allow France to pass to mount.

France is trying to control the action in half guard but Brown is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

France is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Brown defends it well.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Brown takes one on the chin but seems OK.

Brown uses good head movement to avoid the hook from France.
Brown tries to land a front kick but France steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

Brown throws a body kick that misses.
Brown lets loose with a powerful body kick. France will feel that in the morning.
Brown stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Brown wants it to stay on the feet.

France throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
France throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Brown's waist but Brown gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing France off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Darwin France. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Jab, jab by Brown - just one landing.
Brown pivots, looking for a leg kick but France is out of range and Brown settles back down.

Brown throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Oh France is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
France is trying hard to land a takedown here. Brown sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Darwin France.
I think Brown has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
