PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Michael Gilchrist (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mauricio Santos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Michael Gilchrist!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Mauricio Santos!
The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Vladimir Khabensky and Aleksei Zolotukhin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Santos fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Gilchrist tries a head kick but it misses.
It seemed like Santos was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Santos moves away from the strike by Gilchrist.
Santos steps in looking to counter with the mid kick but it doesn't connect.

Gilchrist throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Santos tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Gilchrist is in Santos's guard.
Gilchrist wants to get up but he can't break Santos's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Santos holds on and takes a little breather.
Santos wants to sweep but no luck.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Santos working for a triangle but Gilchrist defends it easily.
Gilchrist trying to control the position from guard on top but Santos is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Gilchrist got a little sloppy there for a moment and Santos has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Gilchrist has managed to get both his arms back between Santos's legs - danger averted.
Gilchrist trying to control the position from guard on top but Santos is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Santos controls Gilchrist momentarily but Gilchrist frees himself.
Gilchrist pushes down on Santos's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Gilchrist tries to stand and escape but Santos is controlling the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Gilchrist winds up and cracks Santos with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Santos moves into full guard.

Santos working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Gilchrist doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Gilchrist manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Gilchrist stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Santos swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Santos has control of Gilchrist's left arm, preventing Gilchrist from doing any damage.
Santos has a closed guard, preventing Gilchrist from standing up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Santos working for a triangle but Gilchrist defends it easily.
Santos lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.


Gilchrist looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Gilchrist looking for a sweep. Not yet Gilchrist, not yet.
Santos trying to control the position from guard on top but Gilchrist is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gilchrist trying to keep a closed guard but Santos is proving a slippery customer.
Santos not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Gilchrist keeping moving, preventing Santos from controlling successfully.

Santos drops back looking for a submission - "I'm sorry sir, but I'm gunna break your leg" says Santos as he cranks on the unfortunate limb! Gilchrist screams and taps out before any major damage is done! Don't mess with Santos! Nice submission victory there!
