PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Denver Vasquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Poncio Carrasco (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Denver Vasquez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Poncio Carrasco!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Sosuke Kotani and Hirohito Nitta.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Carrasco closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Vasquez's guard.
Carrasco is fighting to break Vasquez's control of his arms but Vasquez is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Carrasco postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Carrasco wants to control from the top but Vasquez keeps moving.

Vasquez escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Carrasco gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Carrasco is working Vasquez over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Carrasco postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Carrasco has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Carrasco is looking to advance position but Vasquez has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Vasquez can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Carrasco is looking to escape.
Carrasco tries to reverse the position but Vasquez maintains control.
Vasquez really is a fat lump.
Carrasco sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Vasquez winds up and cracks Carrasco with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Carrasco tries to roll over but Vasquez keeps him under control.

Vasquez is trying to control. Carrasco wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Carrasco is trying to stand up here but Vasquez is controlling him well.
Vasquez seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Vasquez thows a huge punch but Carrasco dodges it nicely.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Carrasco is looking to improve his position.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Carrasco tries to close the distance and clinch up but Vasquez swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Carrasco decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Carrasco is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Carrasco is working for a kimura but Vasquez is defending it quite comfortably.

Carrasco is keen to just control but Vasquez is a slippery customer.
Carrasco wants to pass to mount but Vasquez is defending the position.
Carrasco throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Carrasco gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Carrasco tightens his grip and picks Vasquez up, before dumping him to the ground. Vasquez manages to land in guard.
Vasquez wants to stand but Carrasco is controlling the position.
Carrasco is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Carrasco content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

Carrasco looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Vasquez throws a big elbow that misses.
Vasquez might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Carrasco has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Vasquez is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Carrasco.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Vasquez decides to stand up, so the ref orders Carrasco to his feet.

Carrasco closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Poncio Carrasco has got the better of the ground game so far.
Vasquez trying to hold on to Carrasco's head to control him but Carrasco postures up.
Vasquez won't allow Carrasco to pass to mount.
Carrasco keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Vasquez makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Vasquez.

Vasquez wants to control but Carrasco passes easily into half guard.
Carrasco passes the guard and advances to mount!

Carrasco looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
The referee warns Vasquez that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

Vasquez tries to lock up and control but Carrasco gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Carrasco looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

Vasquez tries to get back to half guard but can't.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Poncio Carrasco showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Carrasco buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

Carrasco throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Vasquez tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Carrasco is in Vasquez's guard.

Carrasco gets to his feet. Vasquez looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Vasquez wants to control from the top but Carrasco keeps moving.
Carrasco wants to get back to his feet but Vasquez is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Carrasco holds on and takes a little breather.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Vasquez gets caught flat footed, as Carrasco shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Vasquez is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Carrasco tries to free his leg and advance position but Vasquez is retaining full guard.

Carrasco gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Poncio Carrasco seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Vasquez blocks a low kick nicely.
Vasquez shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Carrasco pinned against the cage. Carrasco gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Vasquez shoots in for a double leg but Carrasco sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Carrasco swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Carrasco forces Vasquez back against the cage and clinches.

Carrasco has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Vasquez is trying to keep an underhook but Carrasco manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Still in half guard, Carrasco seems content to control.
Carrasco wants to free his trapped foot but Vasquez is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Carrasco takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Carrasco is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Carrasco prevents Vasquez from improving his position.

Carrasco is trying to work for a kimura but Vasquez is defending well.
Poncio Carrasco is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Carrasco is taking a breather. Vasquez says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Carrasco wants to control but Vasquez is keeping him busy.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Carrasco is controlling the pace.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Carrasco shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Vasquez napping and manages to drive through into side control!

And that's the end of the fight!
Poncio Carrasco comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Carrasco has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
