PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Phillip Hancock (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kohh Jo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Phillip Hancock!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kohh Jo!
The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Sosuke Kotani and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hancock with a lazy takedown attempt
and Jo counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Hancock looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Hancock shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Jo is looking for a sweep. Hancock is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Hancock trying to control from half guard but Jo is working away.
Jo tries to get to full guard but Hancock has control of the leg.

Jo manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Hancock keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.

Hancock jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Jo walks away with a smile on his face. Hancock gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Phillip Hancock. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hancock shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Jo pinned against the cage. Jo gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Hancock misses with a takedown attempt - Jo sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
No luck for Hancock with that takedown attempt.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Hancock enables Jo to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Hancock manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Jo stands and throws Hancock's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Jo controls the position.
Hancock is looking for a sweep.
Jo tries to score with some ground and pound. Hancock controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Jo tries to move to mount but Hancock blocks the move with his legs.

Jo has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Hancock!

Hancock wants to hold on but Jo pushes him away.
Jo tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Hancock could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Hancock might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

It looks like Jo might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kohh Jo dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Jo closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Jo lands in his opponent's guard.
Jo sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Hancock's guard.
Jo scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Jo in particular looking to stall.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jo is pressing down on Hancock's thigh, looking to free his foot. Hancock is holding on for now.

Jo is controlling the pace.
Jo is continuing to stall.
Hancock trying to control from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Jo takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Hancock shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Jo decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Hancock's guard.
Jo not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Jo advances to half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Jo wants to pass to mount but Hancock is defending the position.
Hancock trying to hold on to Jo's head to control him but Jo postures up.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Jo passes to side control.

Hancock is trying to improve his position.
Jo content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Let's hope that Jo has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Jo has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Kohh Jo showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Hancock keeps the fight on the outside.

Jo feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Jo's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Hancock is looking to sweep but instead, Jo has passed into half guard.
Jo is taking a breather. Hancock says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Hancock has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Jo is working away from the top position though.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Jo defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Hancock.
Jo displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Hancock.
Hancock shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Jo as he jumps to the side.
Jo lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Phillip Hancock. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Jo had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Hancock defends it easily.

Hancock has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Jo is proving hard to escape from.

Jo looking for a guillotine here but Hancock defends easily.
Hancock trying to control the position from guard on top but Jo is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Jo is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Jo wants to sweep but no luck.
Jo preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Jo is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Hancock is aware though and is defending well.
Hancock tries to stand but Jo is controlling from the bottom.

Jo working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Hancock doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Hancock manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Jo is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kohh Jo comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Jo has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
