PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jack Stick (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mikhail Golovkin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jack Stick!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Mikhail Golovkin!
The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Andrew Berry and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Stick dives in and scores a takedown into Golovkin's guard.
Stick really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Stick keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Golovkin's head.
Stick is looking to work some ground and pound but Golovkin has wrist control.
Stick has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Stick missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Golovkin looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Stick postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Golovkin is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Golovkin working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Stick doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Stick manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Stick lands a couple of good shots and Golovkin has given up his back, trying to escape the position!

Golovkin manages to reverse the position and now he's in Stick's guard. Nice work there by Golovkin.
Stick is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Stick holds on and takes a little breather.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Golovkin throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Stick works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Stick looking for a sweep. Not yet Stick, not yet.
Golovkin throws a strike but Stick rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Golovkin wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Stick is now in half guard.

Stick throwing shots but Golovkin is blocking nicely.
Stick not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Stick working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Golovkin is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Stick's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Stick's back!
You can see the frustration on Stick's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Golovkin's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.

Stick covering up well and avoiding damage.
Golovkin throws strikes from the back but Stick rolls nicely and manages to end up in full guard. Nice work by Stick.

Golovkin throws a strike but Stick rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jack Stick dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Stick shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Golovkin manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Stick working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Golovkin's head.
Stick is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Golovkin can do to turn this around?

Golovkin had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Stick defends it easily.

Golovkin has his foot on Stick's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Stick works his way back into a safe position though.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Golovkin pushes a forearm under Stick's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Stick is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
