PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Rigoberto Lamas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jaime Alvarez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Lamas might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Brazilian National Anthem. Rigoberto Lamas has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Rigoberto Lamas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jaime Alvarez!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Gwen Towbar and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alvarez lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Alvarez misses with the combination.
Lamas lands with an overhand left.
Alvarez tries to move into range but Lamas moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Lamas lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Alvarez circles away quickly and effectively.
Lamas goes for a double leg but Alvarez avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Alvarez continues to drive forward.

Alvarez drives through with a takedown into guard.
Alvarez postures up and lands a big shot to Lamas's brow.

Lamas looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Alvarez advances to half guard.
Alvarez looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Alvarez is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Lamas sees it coming and defends easily.
Lamas wants to get back to full guard.

Lamas avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Alvarez.
Lamas wants to control but Alvarez is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Alvarez lands strikes from half guard.
Lamas has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Alvarez is working away from the top position though.
Alvarez tries to pass the half guard into mount. Lamas knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Lamas might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Alvarez is keen to just control but Lamas is a slippery customer.
Alvarez is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Lamas wants to get back to his feet.

Alvarez is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Lamas tries to kick Alvarez off in order to stand up. Alvarez Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Lamas is working to avoid the ground and pound but Alvarez connects with a decent elbow.
We've been hearing good reports from Lamas's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Alvarez lands some shots froms side control.
Alvarez remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Lamas is looking to regain half guard here but Alvarez keeps moving and retains side control.

Alvarez lands an elbow.
Alvarez lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Lamas tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Alvarez trying to control the action but Lamas is working from the bottom.

Alvarez is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Lamas is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Alvarez prevents Lamas from escaping the position.
Alvarez working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Lamas pushes Alvarez away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Alvarez gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jaime Alvarez dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Lamas ducks right into an uppercut from Alvarez.

Alvarez closes the distance and clinches.

Lamas is trying to trip Alvarez. He has hold of a leg but Alvarez is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Lamas persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Alvarez is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Lamas wants to get up but he can't break Alvarez's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Alvarez has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Alvarez looking for a guillotine here but Lamas defends easily.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Lamas's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lamas wants to pass the guard but Alvarez is keeping the position.

Alvarez is looking to cinch up a triangle. Lamas throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Alvarez's body to avoid the submission. Alvarez has instead reached around Lamas's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Alvarez arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:21 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Jaime Alvarez!
