PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Willian French (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Austin Alterdale (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Willian French!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Austin Alterdale!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Tiny Johnson and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alterdale tries to bum rush French with a series of wild strikes but French uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
French is looking to counter with head kicks.

Alterdale decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
French trying to control from the bottom.
French is looking to improve his position.
French keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.

French is defending against the submission attempts here by Alterdale.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
French is trying to control but can't.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The fighters are battling for position here. French manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

French is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Alterdale working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

French lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Alterdale preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
French content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Alterdale can do anything to dispel that myth.

French gets to his feet - Alterdale follows without any prompting.
French moves to clinch but Alterdale breaks away

and Alterdale counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Alterdale.
French looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Alterdale wants to control from the top but French keeps moving.
Alterdale really doesn't want to stay on the ground with French. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
French trying to keep a closed guard but Alterdale is proving a slippery customer.
French could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
French is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Austin Alterdale dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Alterdale feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

French is really struggling to control Alterdale but he's trying to hold on to the position.
French tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Alterdale looking to sit in guard and control but French gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Alterdale is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. French is aware though and is defending well.
French would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

French is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Alterdale sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed French's guard.
Alterdale has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

French is holding on to half guard well.
French trying to control from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
French is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
Alterdale is stalling here. French is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Alterdale seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and French has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
Austin Alterdale has got the better of the ground game so far.
French wants to stand but Alterdale is controlling his arm.

Alterdale tries to get back to half guard but can't.
French wants to control but Alterdale is keeping him busy.
Alterdale is looking for a sweep.

French has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Alterdale shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Alterdale was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

A bit of a lull in the action here.
French continues to stall.
Alterdale working away.

Alterdale stands up and beckons French to his feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Alterdale rushes French and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Austin Alterdale showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

French has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Alterdale is trying to keep an underhook but French manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Alterdale is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of French's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take French's back!

Alterdale is trying to stick to French's back but French is turning into Alterdale. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Alterdale's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by French.
French wanted to stand there but Alterdale had control of the position.

French stands and steps away. Alterdale gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Alterdale wants the takedown. French is fighting it off but Alterdale persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in French's guard against the cage.

French wants to sweep but no luck.
French bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Alterdale's guard.

French wants to stand but Alterdale has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Alterdale utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
French is in close to Alterdale's body, working some short punches and elbows.
French trying to stand up but can't free himself from Alterdale's guard.
French is pushing down on Alterdale's leg trying to pass to half guard. Alterdale is fighting to maintain full guard but French has managed to sneak the leg through.

French seems to be working for a kimura but Alterdale defends the submission attempt.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

French is looking to stand up but Alterdale won't let him.

Alterdale is looking for a triangle but French pushes his legs off easily.

French thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
French tries to stand but Alterdale is controlling from the bottom.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Alterdale is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. French is aware though and is defending well.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Alterdale shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in French's guard.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as French holds on and takes a little breather.
French looking to hit a scissor sweep but Alterdale is one step ahead there.
Willian French has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Austin Alterdale is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

I would just about give that final round to Austin Alterdale.
Well Alterdale has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
