Highland Challenge 12 PBP Commentary


Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mashrafe Mortaza and Luiz Diaz. Luiz Diaz told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Peter Branson, Bart Greer and Dirk Anderson.



The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Diaz stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Diaz wants it to stay on the feet.

Mortaza manages to work his way to half guard, despite Diaz's best efforts.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Diaz is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Mortaza's shoulder. That is not cool.
Mortaza looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

Mortaza had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Diaz defends it easily.

Mortaza stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Diaz swivels though and keeps the full guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Mortaza wants to control from the top but Diaz keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Mortaza shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Diaz counters with a straight right hand.
Diaz goes for a double leg but Mortaza avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Mortaza continues to drive forward.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mashrafe Mortaza. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Diaz closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Mortaza to the mat! Mortaza manages to get full guard.

Mortaza is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Diaz has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Diaz!

Mortaza has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Diaz is working away from the top position though.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Mortaza wants to improve his position but Diaz is controlling well.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mashrafe Mortaza.
Well Diaz has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
