PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Gunji Koizumi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ares Espiro (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gunji Koizumi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Ares Espiro!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Eddie Farnsworth and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Espiro looks to land a right hand but Koizumi moved out of range.
Koizumi misses with a few strikes there.

Koizumi darts in and clinches Espiro up against the cage.
Koizumi has Espiro pressed against the cage.
Koizumi stalls.
Koizumi seems to have come into the fight with the intention of avoiding any damage in the clinch, rather than actually showing any aggression.

Koizumi is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Espiro to keep the fight standing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Espiro is trying to break the clinch but Koizumi is controlling him.

Espiro wants to stand and escape but Koizumi is having none of it.
Koizumi wants to pass the guard but Espiro is keeping the position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Espiro bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Gunji Koizumi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Koizumi darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Koizumi takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Koizumi is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Koizumi wants to pass the guard but Espiro is keeping the position.
Espiro is looking to stand up but Koizumi isn't so interested in that idea.
Koizumi lands a couple of decent looking shots.

Koizumi seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Espiro for as long as he can get away with.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Koizumi won't allow Espiro to sweep him here.

Nice uppercut lands for Espiro. That snapped Koizumi's head back.

Koizumi closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Koizumi is looking for a kimura but Espiro is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Koizumi to get the leverage.

We've been informed that Espiro has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Koizumi remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Koizumi throws a shot from downtown. Espiro moves away and avoids it.
Koizumi is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Espiro can do to turn this around?

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Koizumi is looking to advance position but Espiro won't allow it.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Koizumi perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Espiro is trying to stand.
Koizumi wants to pass to mount but Espiro is defending the position.

Espiro throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
The fighters circling - Espiro throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
As Espiro tries to get set, Koizumi tries to push him back and clinch up but Espiro manages to avoid the attempt.
A slow jab from Espiro misses its intended target.

Koizumi drives through with a takedown into Espiro's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Koizumi is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Espiro is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
You can see the frustration on Espiro's face as Koizumi controls the position.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!



Koizumi has managed to clinch.
Koizumi is working for takedown but Espiro is calmly controlling the position for now.

Koizumi wants the takedown. Espiro is fighting it off but Koizumi persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Espiro's guard against the cage.

Espiro has his foot on Koizumi's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Koizumi works his way back into a safe position though.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Espiro throws a looping overhand right but Koizumi ducks down to avoid it.

Koizumi turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!

Koizumi swings around for an armbar but Espiro sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Koizumi's guard.

Koizumi bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Espiro's guard.

Gunji Koizumi showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Koizumi, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
