PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Reginald Monroe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steven Brook (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Reginald Monroe!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Steven Brook!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Steve Smith and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Brook throws a right and a left that both miss.

Brook moves into the clinch.

Monroe breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Brook misses with a jab, cross combination.

Brook feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Brook looks winded!
Monroe is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Monroe wants to stand up but Brook is controlling him.
Monroe is pulling down on Brook's head to control his posture.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Brook throws a big right hand that misses.
Monroe wants to get back to his feet but Brook is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Monroe is adopting a defensive guard.
Monroe manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Brook manages to get himself to full guard.

Brook looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Monroe will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Monroe looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Monroe's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Monroe throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Brook works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Monroe is stalling in the full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Brook.
Brook throws a head kick that misses.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Horrible takedown attempt by Monroe or perhaps it was just good defense by Brook, which made it look bad.

Brook shoots in and gets a takedown into Monroe's guard.
Monroe pulls Brook in close to prevent any damage.
Brook throws a big right hand that misses.
Brook loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Monroe is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Brook got a little sloppy there for a moment and Monroe has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Brook has managed to get both his arms back between Monroe's legs - danger averted.

Brook trying to control the position from guard on top but Monroe is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Monroe is on top in guard.

Monroe stands up over Brook, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Monroe slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steven Brook dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Brook misses with a double jab

and Monroe holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Brook turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Brook manages to end up in side control.
Monroe tries to buck Brook off but Brook is having none of it.

Brook swings around for an armbar but Monroe sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Brook's guard.
Monroe controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Monroe works over Brook with some ground and pound from guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Monroe is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Brook is breathing heavily.
Monroe trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Monroe controlling from the top position.
Monroe seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Brook for as long as he can get away with.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Further stalling from Monroe.
Monroe pushes down on Brook's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Monroe keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

Brook looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Monroe lands a nice short elbow.
Monroe not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Steven Brook seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Monroe closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Monroe lands in his opponent's guard.
Monroe makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Monroe is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
If it seems like I'm not saying a lot, it's just because Monroe is stinking the place up with his stalling.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Brook pushes Monroe up against the cage in a clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Reginald Monroe dominated that second round.
That's time! Back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Monroe is looking to clinch but Brook is avoiding it.
Brook throws out a counter right but Monroe avoids it with no problem.
Monroe avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Monroe wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Brook throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
As Brook looks to move away, Monroe throws a big counter combo bu Brook just gets out of the way.

Brook drives through and clinches with Monroe against the cage.
Monroe jumps guard but Brook turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Monroe tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Monroe is trying to pull guard but Brook has him pressed against the cage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Reginald Monroe. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Brook takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Monroe successfully pulls guard.
Monroe has control of Brook's left arm, preventing Brook from doing any damage.
Monroe has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Monroe looking for a sweep. Not yet Monroe, not yet.
Monroe is trying to control the position but Brook postures up.
Brook won't allow Monroe to get back to his feet.
Monroe not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Monroe has his feet on Brook's thighs here. He's pushed Brook off and worked for a very quick armbar from the bottom! He's flipped onto his stomach and he's cranking hard on the arm! Brook screams in pain and taps out! This one is all over!
