PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Randolph Turpin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Toni Manel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Manel is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by A Portuguesa. On his way into the cage it seems that Randolph Turpin has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Randolph Turpin seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Randolph Turpin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 30 - 11 - 0, fighting out of New York, Toni Manel!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, James Ackerman and James Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight.
Turpin takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Manel.
It looked like Turpin was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Manel.
Turpin's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Manel connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Turpin scrambles back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Turpin stuffs the takedown attempt from Manel. Manel gets slowly back to his feet.

Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Manel lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Turpin has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Turpin and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Turpin swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Manel shoots in for a double leg but Turpin sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Randolph Turpin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Toni Manel.
Manel shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Turpin but Turpin pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Turpin checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
We've been told by Turpin's head coaches at Team Alpha Male that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Manel wants to slow Turpin down by chopping away at his legs.

Manel throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Turpin sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Turpin appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body.
Turpin stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Turpin wants it to stay on the feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Turpin has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Manel.
Manel scores with a jab to the jaw.

Toni Manel dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Manel ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Turpin moves away.

Turpin throws a quick counter kick to the body but Manel avoids it.

Turpin bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Manel has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

This entire fight has taken place on the feet so far and you wonder whether Turpin might be better served trying to take this one to the ground because he's losing the standup battle so far.

Manel fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Turpin sprawls well initially but Manel persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Manel.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Manel shoots in looking for a takedown. Turpin tries to sprawl out of it but Manel keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Turpin manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Manel throws a leg kick that is checked
and Turpin counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Manel tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Turpin is able to avoid easily.
Turpin swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.

Manel fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Turpin to the ground. Manel is now in Turpin's guard.

Manel postures up.
Manel trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Turpin seems keen to control Manel's posture.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Randolph Turpin.
I think Turpin has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
