PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gerardo Avila (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gio Horst (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Gerardo Avila!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Gio Horst!
The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Colin Fotheringham and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Horst clinches up with Avila and pushes him back against the cage.
The referee calls for Horst to work.
Horst looking to throw knees to the head but Avila is blocking nicely.
Horst gets underhooks to prevent Avila's takedown attempt.
Horst is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Horst wants the takedown. Avila is fighting it off but Horst persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Avila's guard against the cage.
Avila wants to sweep but no luck.
Avila is trying to control the position but Horst postures up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Horst engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Avila is trying to keep Horst in close.
Horst controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Avila misses with a wild body shot.

Horst closes the distance and pushes Avila back into the cage.
Avila throws an elbow but it misses.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Horst has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Avila regains guard immediately.

Avila has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Horst off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Horst throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Avila tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Horst is in Avila's guard.
Avila is looking to stand back up but Horst counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Avila.


Horst looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Avila tries to roll over but Horst keeps him under control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Horst is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Avila is just riding it out for now. Horst eventually gives up the hold.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Avila wants to control but Horst is keeping busy.
Horst perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Avila moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Horst must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Avila is controlling Horst's posture.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Horst is looking to work some ground and pound but Avila has wrist control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gio Horst dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Horst tries to clinch up but Avila circles away and keeps his distance.
Horst throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.

Avila fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Horst turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Horst manages to end up in side control.

Avila tries to buck Horst off but Horst is having none of it.

Gerardo Avila overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Horst is controlling Avila's position as best he can from this difficult position.

Horst has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Avila is on him like a limpet, forcing Horst back against the cage.
Avila tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Horst just stands there and leans against the cage.

Horst gets control of Avila's arms and successfully pulls guard. Horst will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Avila throws an elbow that misses. Horst uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Avila's guard. Nice move by Horst!
Avila pulls Horst in close to his closed guard and prevents Horst from doing any damage or advancing position.

Avila changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Horst fights it off and pushes away nicely.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Avila is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Horst gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Avila keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Horst's efforts to push away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gio Horst showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Avila's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Avila moves out of range as Horst throws a body kick.
Gio Horst seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Avila goes for a takedown attempt but Horst pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Horst moves into the clinch successfully.
Avila tries to pull guard but Horst won't allow it.
Horst tries to break the clinch but Avila is controlling the position.
Avila jumps guard but Horst stands there with Avila around his waist. Avila gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Horst gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.

Avila uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Horst manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Avila on his heels. He'll look to pass Avila's guard now, I'm sure.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Gio Horst comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Horst has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
