And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Chris Beattie!
The judges for this bout are Francis DeMontford, Topper Green and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Beattie throws a head kick that misses.
Shields tries to counter with a takedown but Beattie is quick to defend against it.
Beattie misses with a head kick.
Shields feinted with a counter takedown.
Shields moves out of range of the leg kick from Beattie.

and Shields counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Beattie!
Beattie is not content to let Shields control the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shields lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Shields in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.

Shields goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Beattie has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Shields but great work by Beattie.
Beattie tries to advance position but instead Shields slips a leg back in to half guard.
Shields trying to get back to full guard but Beattie takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount!

Beattie is trying to control. Shields wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Beattie takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Shields is looking for a sweep. Beattie is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Shields is working hard here to advance position.

Shields looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Shields is staying active underneath Beattie, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Shields is looking to improve his position.

Shields definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Shields manages to get to full guard.

Shields escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Beattie gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Shields working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Beattie doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Beattie manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Beattie is pushing down on Shields's leg trying to pass to half guard. Shields is fighting to maintain full guard but Beattie has managed to sneak the leg through.
Shields tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Beattie is controlling the pace.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Shields tries to roll over but Beattie keeps him under control.
Shields is trying to maintain the position but Beattie is very close to passing his half guard.
Beattie slows the pace down in half guard.
Shields wants to control but Beattie is keeping busy and won't allow it.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Shields changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Beattie motions for Shields to come forward. Beattie throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Beattie swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Beattie throws a head kick but Shields moves out of range.
Shields appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Beattie throws a hook to the side of Shields's head but Shields sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Beattie avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Shields.

Shields is trying to move to mount but Beattie reverses beautifully and ends up in Shields's guard.

Shields has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Beattie can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Shields looking to hit a scissor sweep but Beattie is one step ahead there.

Shields looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Shields keeping moving, preventing Beattie from controlling successfully.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Shields working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Beattie doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Beattie manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Shields looking for a sweep. Not yet Shields, not yet.
Beattie must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Beattie content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Shields has locked up a guillotine! Shields's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Beattie is holding on here and Shields must be using up a lot of energy. Beattie has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Shields gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!
