PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Scot Sanchez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Zoro Roronoa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Scot Sanchez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Zoro Roronoa!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Stewart Dunkirk and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sanchez tries to clinch up but Roronoa circles away and keeps his distance.
Zoro Roronoa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sanchez avoids a kick to the body.

Roronoa drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Roronoa controlling from the top position.
Sanchez is controlling Roronoa's posture.
Roronoa in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Roronoa wants to control from the top but Sanchez keeps moving.
Sanchez will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Roronoa wants to pass the guard but Sanchez is keeping the position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Roronoa shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Sanchez napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Sanchez is trying to improve his position.
Sanchez really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

It looks like Roronoa might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Sanchez regains half guard, as Roronoa was trying to land strikes.
Sanchez is controlling Roronoa's position as best he can from this difficult position.

Roronoa is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Sanchez is just riding it out for now. Roronoa eventually gives up the hold.

Roronoa seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Roronoa tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Sanchez attempts a counter takedown but Roronoa avoids it well and moves away.

It looks like Scot Sanchez has been cut.

and Sanchez counters by clinching up.

Sanchez manages to break the clinch.

Roronoa shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Sanchez manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Sanchez is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Sanchez breaks from the clinch.

Roronoa drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Sanchez throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!
Roronoa throws a combination. Sanchez tries to block but a couple of punches get through.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Zoro Roronoa will probably get the nod.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Roronoa moves into the clinch successfully.
Sanchez's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
Sanchez tries to circle away but Roronoa has him pinned against the cage.

Sanchez breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Roronoa shoots in and gets a takedown into Sanchez's guard.
Sanchez is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Sanchez wants to get back to his feet but Roronoa is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Sanchez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Roronoa decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Sanchez is looking to clinch but Roronoa is avoiding it.
Roronoa lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.

Roronoa closes the distance and clinches.
Sanchez blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Sanchez is trying to stall.
Sanchez is trying to maintain a safe position but Roronoa gets an underhook and turns Sanchez into the cage.
Sanchez seems a little flustered. He's come in with the intention of controlling the clinch but Roronoa is preventing him from doing so, at least for the moment.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Sanchez prevents Roronoa from breaking the clinch.
Sanchez jumps guard but Roronoa stands there with Sanchez around his waist. Sanchez gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Roronoa has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Sanchez is trying to keep an underhook but Roronoa manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Sanchez bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Roronoa fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Sanchez sprawls well initially but Roronoa persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Roronoa shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Roronoa showed some decent athleticism there.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Roronoa shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Sanchez is trying to defend but Roronoa finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

A close second round but Zoro Roronoa will probably get the nod - 10:9.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Roronoa feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Sanchez is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Roronoa looking to sit in guard and control but Sanchez gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Roronoa is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Sanchez breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Roronoa manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Sanchez on his heels. He'll look to pass Sanchez's guard now, I'm sure.

Roronoa changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Sanchez looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Roronoa takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Scot Sanchez overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Roronoa moves nicely into side control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Sanchez is not content to let Roronoa control the position.

Roronoa swings around for an armbar but Sanchez sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Roronoa's guard.

Sanchez decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Roronoa, up you get!

Roronoa is trying to break the clinch but Sanchez has him pressed against the cage.
Roronoa tries to circle away but Sanchez has him pinned against the cage.

Sanchez pulls Roronoa in close to his closed guard and prevents Roronoa from doing any damage or advancing position.
Sanchez lands a decent punch to the body there.

Roronoa stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Sanchez swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Sanchez pulls Roronoa in close to prevent any damage.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Roronoa clinches up with Sanchez and pushes him back against the cage.
Sanchez crunches a lovely knee into Roronoa's ribcage.

The crowd are getting pretty annoyed with Sanchez for his constant stalling in the clinch and are voicing their displeasure.

Sanchez lands an elbow inside that Roronoa shrugs off.
Scot Sanchez has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Zoro Roronoa is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Sanchez pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Scot Sanchez.
I think Roronoa has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
