PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Royal Strickland (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tommy Gunn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gunn is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by N.W.O.-Ministry. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Royal Strickland!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tommy Gunn!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Robert Twigg and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gunn gets the takedown into side control.

Gunn goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Strickland rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Gunn's guard! Nice work there by Strickland!

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Strickland has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Gunn is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Strickland pulls his head out easily.
Gunn is looking for a sweep. Strickland is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Strickland seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Gunn is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Strickland's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Strickland's back!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Strickland accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Strickland cracks Gunn with a solid left hand.

Gunn is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Strickland lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Strickland is nestled in close to Gunn, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Strickland connects with a nice short shot to Gunn's temple.

Gunn has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, Strickland escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by Strickland!

Gunn gets back to half guard.
Gunn is trying to maintain the position but Strickland is very close to passing his half guard.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Strickland cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Gunn rushes Strickland and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Strickland escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Gunn displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Strickland.
Tommy Gunn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Gunn is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Strickland can't fight it off and eventually Gunn manages to take the fight to the floor. Strickland looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Strickland will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Tommy Gunn showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Strickland enables Gunn to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Strickland manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Gunn stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Strickland swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Strickland winds up and cracks Gunn with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Gunn can do anything to dispel that myth.

Gunn tries to roll over but Strickland keeps him under control.
Gunn really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Strickland. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Gunn moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Strickland content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

Gunn has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Strickland is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Gunn.

Gunn is looking for a sweep.
Gunn trying to control but Strickland flips him over like a cheap hooker and has his back!
Strickland is throwing strikes from the back here. Oh that last one was to the back of the head. Strickland gets a warning from the referee. He throws another strike to the back of the head straight away though and the referee has seen enough. He breaks up the two fighters and stands them back up. Strickland gets a real talking to here and is lucky not to get a point deducted. Strickland apologises and we restart here on the feet.

Gunn decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Gunn is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Strickland defends it well.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Gunn has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Strickland regains guard immediately.

Royal Strickland overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Royal Strickland.
I think Strickland has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
