PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Berry Strickland (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jonny Mendoza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Jonny Mendoza was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Berry Strickland!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jonny Mendoza!
The judges for this bout are Elvis Blanc, William Peck and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Strickland doesn't manage to clinch there - Mendoza circles away.
Mendoza changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Strickland takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Mendoza throws the kick towards the body but Strickland avoids it.
Strickland could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Mendoza fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Strickland, pushing him back against the cage.

Mendoza manages to break the clinch.
Strickland is looking to clinch but Mendoza is avoiding it.
Strickland on the wrong end of a kick to the body.

Strickland gets caught flat footed, as Mendoza shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Strickland escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mendoza gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Mendoza drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Strickland manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Mendoza has Strickland in his guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mendoza utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Mendoza not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Strickland drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Mendoza manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Strickland has Mendoza in his guard.
Mendoza controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Mendoza scoring with some ground and pound.
Strickland is looking to sweep but instead, Mendoza has passed into half guard.

Mendoza is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Still in half guard, Mendoza seems content to control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mendoza is looking to pass Strickland's guard but actually Strickland recovers to full guard.

Mendoza postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Mendoza controls from within his opponent's guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Strickland stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Strickland wants it to stay on the feet.
Strickland looked to counter that last move with a leg kick but didn't pull the trigger.
Mendoza pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
As Mendoza backs away, Strickland returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.
Strickland shoots in looking for a takedown. Mendoza tries to sprawl out of it but Strickland keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Mendoza manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Strickland blocks a head kick by Mendoza.
Horrible takedown attempt by Mendoza or perhaps it was just good defense by Strickland, which made it look bad.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jonny Mendoza dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Mendoza closes the distance and clinches.

Mendoza manages to break the clinch.
Mendoza throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Mendoza throws a head kick but Strickland moves out of range.

Mendoza has taken the fight to the clinch.

Strickland pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Mendoza is defended easily by Strickland.

Mendoza looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Strickland is fending him off so far but Mendoza persists. Nope, Strickland circles away and we're back to standing.

Strickland darts in and clinches Mendoza up against the cage.
Mendoza jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Strickland walks away with a smile on his face. Mendoza gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Berry Strickland has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jonny Mendoza.
Strickland is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Mendoza moves into the clinch.

Mendoza is trying to trip Strickland. He has hold of a leg but Strickland is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Mendoza persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Strickland manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

Strickland jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Mendoza walks away with a smile on his face. Strickland gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Strickland gets tackled into the cage by Mendoza. Mendoza maintains the clinch.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

It looks like Berry Strickland has been cut.
Mendoza struggles to land a body shot inside as Strickland controls his hands.
Strickland jumps guard but Mendoza stands there with Strickland around his waist. Strickland gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Strickland tries to score a body lock takedown but Mendoza shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Strickland has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Mendoza is trying to keep an underhook but Strickland manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Mendoza has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Strickland is on him like a limpet, forcing Mendoza back against the cage.
Strickland keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Mendoza's efforts to push away.

Strickland wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Mendoza tries to work over Strickland's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

Strickland doesn't manage to clinch there - Mendoza circles away.

Strickland's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Mendoza shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Strickland defends it nicely.

Jonny Mendoza showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Mendoza closes the distance and clinches up with Strickland, looking for a takedown. Mendoza pushes Strickland against the cage but Strickland circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Mendoza feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

and Strickland counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Berry Strickland has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jonny Mendoza.
Mendoza takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Strickland clinches.

Mendoza pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Strickland has closed the distance and engaged Mendoza in a clinch.
Mendoza wants to stall.
Strickland tries to circle away but Mendoza has him pinned against the cage.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Strickland.
Jonny Mendoza seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.

Strickland tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Mendoza just stands there and leans against the cage.

The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.
Mendoza lands a knee to the body.
Strickland prevents the takedown attempt.
Mendoza jumps guard but Strickland stands there with Mendoza around his waist. Mendoza gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Mendoza shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Strickland napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Mendoza wants to lay and pray for a moment but Strickland keeps working.

Mendoza decides to stand back up. Mendoza steps back and let's Strickland get back to his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Berry Strickland.
I think Mendoza has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
