The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bon misses with a lunging right hand

and Akona counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Bon wants to get back to his feet but Akona is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Akona's corner is telling him to maintain position.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Bon can do anything to dispel that myth.
Akona stands up over Bon, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Akona controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Akona drops back, looking for a kneebar! Bon looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Bon looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Bon!

Bon stands up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Akona blocks a head kick by Bon.
Akona tries to counter with a takedown but Bon is quick to defend against it.
Bon throws a right hand that Akona ducks under and follows up with a left that Akona also avoids with ease.
Bon moves into range and connects with a jab.

Bon misses with a low kick.
Akona wants to slow Bon down by chopping away at his legs.
Remy Bon is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
A looping hook to the body misses from Bon. Akona does a little dance to reset his feet.
Bon will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Bon stuffs the takedown attempt from Akona. Akona gets slowly back to his feet.

Bon throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Akona.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Bon enables Akona to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Bon manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Bon told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Bon is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Akona is controlling him well.

That was a close round but I would say that Pounamu Akona will probably get the nod.

Akona closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Bon did well to prevent Akona getting side control.
Bon is looking to escape.

Akona has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Bon defend it? Akona steps over the head and cranks it - Bon is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Akona!
