PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Joyner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jones has chosen GDFR-Flo Rida as his entrance music. Jon Jones told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Joyner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jon Jones!
The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, Franklyn Lucas and Columbo Gatti.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones misses with a head kick.
Joyner changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
A head kick by Jones misses
and Joyner counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Jones misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Jones throws a head kick that misses.
Joyner tries to counter with a takedown but Jones is quick to defend against it.

Jones gets tackled into the cage by Joyner. Joyner maintains the clinch.

Joyner escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Joyner closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Joyner throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Jones to regain full guard.
Joyner throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Jones works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Joyner stands up and waves to Jones to follow him.
Jones tries to clinch up but Joyner circles away and keeps his distance.
Jones misses with a takedown

and Joyner holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Joyner blocks a punch to the side of the head.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Joyner is trying to break free.

Joyner breaks the clinch.

Joyner gets a clinch.
Jones wants to break the clinch but can't.
Jones jumps guard but Joyner turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Joyner manages to break the clinch.
Jones tries to close the distance and clinch but Joyner swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Jones fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Jones displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Joyner.
Jones misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Joyner fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Jones sprawls well initially but Joyner persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Joyner seems to be working for a kimura but Jones defends the submission attempt.

Joyner gets to his feet - back to striking we go!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Jones throws a head kick that misses
and Jones takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

and Joyner decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Jones's guard.

Jones is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Jones looks winded!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Jones drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Joyner gets the underhooks and prevents it.
John Joyner has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jon Jones.

Joyner escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Jones with a lazy takedown attempt
and Joyner counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Jones takes a shot to the head.

Joyner manages to break the clinch.

Joyner pushes Jones up against the cage in a clinch.
Jones wants to break free but Joyner has control.

Joyner breaks from the clinch.
Jones looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Joyner instigates a clinch.

Joyner's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Jones gets tackled into the cage by Joyner. Joyner maintains the clinch.

Joyner manages to break the clinch.

Joyner shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Jones is trying to defend but Joyner finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Joyner is nestled in close to Jones, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Jones really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Joyner. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Joyner is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Jones is just riding it out for now. Joyner eventually gives up the hold.

Jones is pushing off trying to get to his feet. Joyner has hold of the leg though and he's dropped back for a heel hook… has he got it?? YES! Jones is tapping! This fight is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:51 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Heel Hook). John Joyner!
The defeated Jon Jones had this to say: 'I fought hard but the better man won and all I can say is congrats, and we will get them next time! Thank you.'.
