PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jack Shaw (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sailor Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shaw's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Family Force 5 - Chainsaw. Gracie comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Disciples of Power - Lords of Creation kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Sailor Gracie is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jack Shaw!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Sailor Gracie!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Wesley Smith and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shaw throws a sloppy head kick and Gracie moves out of range easily.
Gracie will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Shaw misses with a head kick.
Gracie shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Shaw defends it nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Gracie tries to counter by closing the distance.

Shaw tries to sprawl but Gracie drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Gracie is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Shaw has managed to free his arm - good work.
Gracie lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Gracie is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Shaw wants to improve his position but Gracie is controlling well.

Gracie seems to be working for a kimura but Shaw defends the submission attempt.

Shaw is trying to control but can't.
Gracie wants to take a breather but Shaw is having none of it.

Gracie is working for an americana but Shaw has been sneaky and has managed to get back to half guard, whilst Gracie was thinking about the submission.
Shaw is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Gracie looking to sit in guard and control but Shaw gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Shaw trying to control but Gracie is working from the bottom.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Gracie is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Shaw is aware though and is defending well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Gracie has his foot on Shaw's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Shaw works his way back into a safe position though.

Gracie looking for subs off his back but Shaw has passed one foot through into half guard.

Gracie has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, Shaw escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by Shaw!
Shaw has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Gracie regains half guard.

Gracie looking to force a kimura from the bottom here. He's concentrating on that move too much though and Shaw pushes past his half guard into mount!

Shaw stands up from mount. Strange move.
Shaw lands a right hook to the body.
Shaw pulls out of a head kick attempt.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Shaw throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Gracie shoots and misses
and Shaw counters with a straight right hand.
Jack Shaw has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sailor Gracie.
Gracie shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Shaw sprawls well. Shaw wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gracie gets slowly back to his feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Gracie tries to close the distance and clinch up but Shaw swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Shaw was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jack Shaw dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Gracie closes the distance and clinches.

Gracie is trying to trip Shaw. He has hold of a leg but Shaw is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Gracie persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Shaw manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
Shaw tries to throw a body punch but Gracie avoids it by throwing Shaw back against the cage.
Gracie blocks a body shot from Shaw.
Shaw stalls.
Shaw swings away with an uppercut that misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shaw struggles to land a body shot inside as Gracie controls his hands.
Shaw doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Shaw is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Shaw breaks the clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gracie shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
A head kick misses from Shaw.
Gracie drops his hands momentarily and Shaw takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Gracie fails with a takedown attempt.
Shaw is looking to counter with a body kick.
Jack Shaw is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Shaw throws a head kick but Gracie moves out of range.
Gracie feints the counter takedown.
Gracie shoots in for a takedown but Shaw shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
It looked like Shaw was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

Gracie avoids the head kick by Shaw.
Gracie tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

and Shaw counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Gracie thinking.

Sailor Gracie seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Gracie closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Gracie lands in his opponent's guard.
Gracie works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Gracie looking for a submission but Shaw manages to get full guard, putting an end to that submission attempt.
Shaw is adopting a defensive guard.

Gracie is working Shaw over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Shaw escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Gracie gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Shaw is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Shaw is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Gracie is aware though and is defending well.

Sailor Gracie has got the better of the ground game so far.

Gracie is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Gracie with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Gracie drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Shaw defends it well.

Shaw looks to land a combination. Gracie sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Gracie throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Shaw's waist but Shaw gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gracie off to one side.
Shaw appeared to be looking to counter that last move with a leg kick.
Jack Shaw has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sailor Gracie.

and Shaw counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Gracie takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Gracie tries for a takedown but Shaw sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Shaw displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Gracie.
Shaw throws a counter high kick but Gracie was just alert enough to avoid it.
Shaw is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.
Shaw tries to bum rush Gracie with a series of wild strikes but Gracie uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Shaw is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Gracie can do to turn this around?

Shaw throws a combination. Gracie tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Sloppy strikes from Shaw. Those never looked like landing.
Gracie looks for a takedown but Shaw sprawls well.

Sailor Gracie has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Shaw scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Gracie doesn't seem bothered though.
Shaw throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Gracie changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Shaw drops Gracie with a straight left! Oh this is bad for Gracie! Shaw dives in and starts dropping bombs - the referee has no choice but to step in and save him!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:50 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Jack Shaw!
Jack Shaw seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
The defeated Sailor Gracie had this to say: 'Dimensionless, I shall return stronger than you can imagine.'.
