PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Mark Wilson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gunji Koizumi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Gunji Koizumi was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mark Wilson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gunji Koizumi!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Chris Downing and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wilson has a takedown stuffed.
Horrible takedown attempt by Wilson or perhaps it was just good defense by Koizumi, which made it look bad.
Koizumi scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Wilson is defended easily by Koizumi.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mark Wilson. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Koizumi fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Koizumi throws a body punch but Wilson moves out of range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Koizumi throws the kick towards the body but Wilson avoids it.
Koizumi tries to clinch up.
Koizumi throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Wilson sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Koizumi drives through with a takedown into Wilson's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Koizumi working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

Wilson wants to stand but Koizumi is controlling the position.
Koizumi should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Koizumi forces his way into half guard.
Koizumi is trying to control. Wilson wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Koizumi is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Wilson reverses the position - he's now on top in Koizumi's guard.
Koizumi lands some strikes from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Wilson postures up.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Gunji Koizumi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Wilson avoids the head kick by Koizumi.
Wilson staying out of range there.
Wilson looks for the body kick but Koizumi saw that one coming.
Wilson moves out of range as Koizumi throws a body kick.
Wilson attempts a counter takedown but Koizumi avoids it well and moves away.
Nice defenses there by Wilson.
Wilson throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Koizumi counters with a takedown into side control.
Koizumi tries to move into full mount but can't pass Wilson's legs.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Wilson is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Koizumi asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Wilson knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Koizumi on the ground.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Wilson prevents Koizumi from moving into mount.
Wilson is trying to buck Koizumi off.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Koizumi thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Koizumi prevents Wilson from escaping the position.
Koizumi misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

Koizumi tries for a kimura but Wilson is defending well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Koizumi has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Wilson sneaks out the side door and pushes Koizumi away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
No luck for Wilson with that takedown attempt.

Wilson fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Koizumi to the ground. Wilson is now in Koizumi's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gunji Koizumi dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Koizumi throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Wilson drops down looking for a counter takedown but Koizumi sprawls and moves away.
Wilson shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Koizumi throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Koizumi tries to clinch

and Wilson counters with a single leg into guard. Koizumi didn't expect that.
Wilson throws a big elbow that misses.
Koizumi is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Koizumi is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Koizumi looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Wilson is defending well. Koizumi quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Wilson has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Koizumi celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Gunji Koizumi!
