PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Shakhbulat Shamkhalaev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ronaldo Faber (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shamkhalaev comes to the cage accompanied by CoCo (MAKJ Remix) - O.T. Genasis. The key to victory for Shakhbulat Shamkhalaev has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Shakhbulat Shamkhalaev!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ronaldo Faber!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Chris Downing and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Shamkhalaev scores with an uppercut up the middle.
Faber is pushing Shamkhalaev up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Faber doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Shamkhalaev lands a glancing elbow in the clinch.


It looks like Ronaldo Faber has been cut.
Faber tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Shamkhalaev smiles and moves away.
Shamkhalaev defending well as Faber loads up on a big left hand.
Decent striking displayed by Faber there.
Faber looks to throw the jab but Shamkhalaev is out of range.
Faber throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

and Shamkhalaev counters with a nice uppercut.
Shamkhalaev is looking to clinch.
A telegraphed right hand from Faber misses the target.
Faber misses with a body shot
and Shamkhalaev counters with a left to the body.
Faber circles away from the clinch attempt.
Shamkhalaev tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Faber manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
And Faber tries to counter it with a takedown but Shamkhalaev pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Shamkhalaev has been working on his boxing with his coaches at LOD: Top Team in the buildup to the fight.

Faber shoots in and bounces Shamkhalaev off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Shamkhalaev is looking to stand back up but Faber counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Shamkhalaev.
Faber seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Shamkhalaev does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Faber tries to pass the half guard into mount. Shamkhalaev knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Faber wants to work for an arm triangle but Shamkhalaev is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Faber seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Shamkhalaev does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Faber has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Brutal Force Training. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.
Faber is looking to advance position but Shamkhalaev won't allow it.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Faber has a takedown stuffed.

Faber shoots for a takedown but Shamkhalaev saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Shakhbulat Shamkhalaev has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ronaldo Faber.

That was a close round but I would say that Shakhbulat Shamkhalaev will probably get the nod.

That's time! Shamkhalaev's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Faber decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Faber wants to lay and pray for a moment but Shamkhalaev keeps working.
Faber seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Shamkhalaev on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Shamkhalaev tries to get out of the position.
Faber not doing much here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Faber is working for a kimura but Shamkhalaev is defending it quite comfortably.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Shamkhalaev wants to get back to his feet.

Faber looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Faber moves into full mount! Shamkhalaev won't be happy about that!
Faber won't let Shamkhalaev get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.

Faber unloads with some shots from mount but Shamkhalaev bucks and avoids them well.

Faber cracks Shamkhalaev with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.


It looks like Shakhbulat Shamkhalaev has been cut.

Faber working from mount. He moves in close and looks like he might be going for an arm triangle... He's hopped off to the side and he's transitioned into an Anaconda choke. Shamkhalaev turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips Faber off and cradles Shamkhalaev's limp body as Faber celebrates with his corner.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:38 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Anaconda Choke). Ronaldo Faber!
Ronaldo Faber decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
