PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Sammy Owens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alf Stewart (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alf Stewart told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Sammy Owens!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Alf Stewart!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Ben Watson and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stewart tries to clinch but Owens is having none of it.
Owens is looking to counter punch.
Owens misses with a wild body shot.

Owens changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Stewart looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Stewart is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
Owens taking a breather here.
Owens lands a decent elbow from side control.

Owens tries for a kimura but Stewart is defending well.
Owens landing a few strikes.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
An elbow from Owens crashes against the mat.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The ground and pound from Owens seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Stewart is pushing Owens's head away, looking to escape. Owens manages to hold on to the position though.

Owens slows the pace down.
Stewart is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Owens is controlling him well.

Owens prevents Stewart from escaping the position.
Owens tries to move into full mount but can't pass Stewart's legs.
Owens landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.

Owens has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Owens in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
Owens remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Owens looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Stewart pushes Owens away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Owens gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Stewart is working to avoid the ground and pound but Owens connects with a decent elbow.
Owens lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Stewart down.
Stewart is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Owens is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Stewart knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Owens is trying to get an arm triangle but Stewart is defending well.
Stewart is letting Owens control him for a moment.
Stewart really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Owens. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Stewart stops Owens from passing to mount.
Owens has knee on belly and moves into mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Owens content just to control the position here.
Owens lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Stewart hang on?

The referee warns Stewart that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
We've been informed that Stewart has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.

Stewart is bucking up trying to escape but Owens cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Stewart is rocked!
Owens cracks Stewart with a big head shot that has him covering up instantly! He's rolled onto his side and the referee has seen enough - this one is aaaaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Sammy Owens!
Our winner, Sammy Owens, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
