PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Chad Tyrell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Javier Martinez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Martinez has chosen McFadden and Whitehead - Ain't no stopping us now as his entrance music. The key to victory for Chad Tyrell has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Javier Martinez!
The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, Anthony Taglia and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Martinez tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Tyrell manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Tyrell avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Good exchange - Martinez coming out on top.
Tyrell pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Martinez scores with a hook to the body. Tyrell takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Martinez tries to clinch but Tyrell is having none of it.

We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Martinez has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Tyrell throws a hook but Martinez avoids it easily.

A looping hook to the body misses from Martinez. Tyrell does a little dance to reset his feet.
Tyrell throws a leg kick which misses Martinez's front leg but catches the back leg as Martinez tries to avoid it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Martinez tries to close the distance and clinch up but Tyrell swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Tyrell looked to counter that last move with a leg kick but didn't pull the trigger.
Tyrell throws a head kick but Martinez moves out of range.

Tyrell thuds his right hand into Martinez's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

It looks like Javier Martinez has been cut.

Martinez drops his hands momentarily and Tyrell takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Tyrell buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Martinez lands with an overhand left.
Tyrell just misses with a punch to the body.
Martinez tries to counter with a clinch but Tyrell shakes him off and moves away.
Tyrell with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Martinez to score with a decent uppercut.
Chad Tyrell is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Martinez scores with the left hand. Tyrell knows he should have avoided that one.

and Tyrell counters with a flying knee. Nice.

enabling Tyrell to counter with a crisp jab.
Martinez is still on wobbly legs! Can Tyrell finish him?

Tyrell throws a nice inside leg kick.
Martinez seems to have recovered his senses.

Martinez lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Tyrell circles away quickly and effectively.
Tyrell looked to counter with a high kick but didn't commit.

Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Tyrell.
Martinez takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?

and Martinez counters with a shoot takedown. Tyrell fights it but they end up in guard.

Martinez stands up over Tyrell, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Tyrell is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

We've been hearing that Tyrell has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.
Tyrell will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Tyrell has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Tyrell is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Martinez can do to turn this around?
