PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Nick Shields (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Christopher Binse (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 26 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Nick Shields!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 26 - 14 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Christopher Binse!
The judges for this bout are Paul Aken, Paulsen Ambrosius and Saam Ante.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shields does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Shields lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Shields stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Binse.
Shields slips a jab from Binse.
Shields keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Binse.
Shields keeps the fight on the outside.
Binse scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Shields looks to score with a jab to the body but Binse is just out of range.
Shields throws a body punch but Binse moves out of range.
Binse moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Binse misses with a low kick.
Shields uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Binse.
Binse throws a series of punches but Shields avoids them all with ease.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Binse has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shields throws a head kick but Binse moves out of range.
Binse takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Binse shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Christopher Binse seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Shields is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Binse is aware though and is defending well.
Shields has control of Binse's left arm, preventing Binse from doing any damage.

Binse wants to control from the top but Shields keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Shields has momentary wrist control but Binse slips an elbow through the middle.

Shields had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Binse defends it easily.

Binse works over Shields with some ground and pound from guard.
Shields looking to control.
Shields avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Binse content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

Shields has his foot on Binse's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Binse works his way back into a safe position though.
Binse postures up in Shields's guard and throws a big left but Shields blocks it.

Shields is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Binse is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Binse throws a strike but Shields rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Shields connects with a couple of short punches.
Shields trying to control but Binse is working from the bottom.
Binse looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Binse wants to hit a switch here but Shields passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Binse there!

Shields trying to control but Binse is having none of it.
Binse is flailing around like a fish out of water, trying to land strikes.
Shields tries to control but Binse wriggling away.
Shields unloads with some shots from mount but Binse bucks and avoids them well.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Binse is trying to escape the mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Christopher Binse will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Binse misses with a body kick.
Shields drops down looking for a counter takedown but Binse sprawls and moves away.
Shields shoots in looking for a takedown. Binse tries to sprawl out of it but Shields keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Binse manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Binse appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.
Shields misses with a wild body shot.
Binse fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Shields looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Shields keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Binse.
It appears Shields was looking to counter with a kick there.
Binse throws a right and a left that Shields avoids nicely.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Shields enables Binse to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Shields manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Binse's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Shields is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Shields is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Binse defends well.

Binse wants to pass the guard but Shields is keeping the position.

Shields has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Binse can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Binse with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Shields pulls Binse in to control the position.
Binse is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Binse postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Shields has an active guard here but Binse has managed to pass into half guard.

Binse is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Binse lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Binse throwing shots but Shields is blocking nicely.
Shields is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Binse lands a nice short elbow.
Shields is not content to let Binse control the position.

Binse with the ground and pound but Shields uses the opportunity to regain guard.

Shields working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Binse doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Binse manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Shields wants to sweep here but Binse controlling him for the moment.

Shields pushes a forearm under Binse's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Binse is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!

Our winner, Nick Shields, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
