PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Lionel Lindsay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Leo Sonnen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sonnen has chosen Scream Aim Fire as his entrance music. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Lionel Lindsay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Leo Sonnen!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Alan Glass and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Lindsay shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Sonnen's guard.
Lindsay has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Sonnen manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Lindsay manages to get himself to full guard.

Sonnen throws a big elbow that misses.
Lindsay pulls Sonnen in to control the position.

Sonnen throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Lindsay tries to clinch but Sonnen is having none of it.
Leo Sonnen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Lindsay uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Sonnen.
Lindsay throws a big counter combination but Sonnen scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Sonnen digs a good hook to Lindsay's body.
Sonnen lands a slapping body shot.
Sonnen goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Sonnen dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Sonnen swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Lindsay.
Sonnen throws a lazy right hand but Lindsay sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Sonnen throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Lindsay.
A swing and a miss from Sonnen.
A big right from Sonnen misses.
It looked like Lindsay wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Lindsay looks for the body kick but Sonnen saw that one coming.

Sonnen gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Lindsay tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Lindsay manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

With the fighters clinched against the cage, Sonnen creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.

It looks like Lionel Lindsay has been cut.

Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Sonnen.
Sonnen is struggling to control the position.

Lindsay breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Sonnen ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Lindsay moves away.
Sonnen swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Lindsay feinted with a counter takedown.
Sonnen goes for a double leg but Lindsay avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Lindsay continues to drive forward.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Sonnen.

Lindsay is looking to counter the offense by Sonnen and move into the clinch.
Sonnen fails in his attempt to clinch.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
A looping hook to the body misses from Sonnen. Lindsay does a little dance to reset his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Lindsay's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Lindsay takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Lindsay tries to close the distance and clinch up but Sonnen swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Sonnen just misses with a punch to the body.
Lindsay wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Lindsay throws an overhand right that lands on Sonnen's shoulder, as Sonnen tries to avoid the shot.
Sonnen dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Sonnen throws a sloppy body shot
and Lindsay counters with a straight right hand.
Lindsay has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Sonnen finds it's way round the side to connect with Lindsay's head.
Good work by Sonnen as he checks the leg kick.

We've been told by Lindsay's head coaches at Wrecking Crew Elite MMA that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

and Lindsay connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Lindsay leaves Sonnen with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Lindsay was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.

Sonnen throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Lindsay tries to pull guard but Sonnen forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Sonnen blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Sonnen lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.

Lionel Lindsay's cut is getting worse.
Sonnen is pushing Lindsay up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Sonnen works on Lindsay's body with a couple of short punches.
Lindsay tries a knee to the head but Sonnen blocks it.
The referee is keeping an eye on Sonnen - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.

Sonnen goes for a takedown in the clinch but Lindsay prevents it.

Sonnen breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
The fighters circle momentarily. Sonnen darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Sonnen clobbers Lindsay with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.

Sonnen closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Sonnen lands in his opponent's guard.
Sonnen wants to control from the top but Lindsay keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Leo Sonnen showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Sonnen tries to score a power double leg takedown but Lindsay sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Sonnen somewhat.
Lindsay appears to be looking for a big counter.
Sonnen has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Lindsay tries to land a knee to the head but Sonnen blocks with his arms.

Sonnen is trying to trip Lindsay. He has hold of a leg but Lindsay is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Sonnen persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sonnen prevents Lindsay from getting back to his feet.
Lindsay trying to keep a closed guard but Sonnen is proving a slippery customer.
Sonnen throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Lindsay works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Sonnen stays in close to Lindsay's body and controls the position.
Lindsay tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Sonnen advances position into side control!
Sonnen content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Sonnen laying and praying for a moment but Lindsay takes advantage and regains half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sonnen working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Lindsay wants to control but Sonnen passes into side.
Sonnen remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Leo Sonnen is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Lindsay manages to work his way to half guard, despite Sonnen's best efforts.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Lindsay wants to improve his position but Sonnen is controlling well.
Sonnen is controlling the pace.

Lionel Lindsay has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Sonnen is taking a breather. Lindsay says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Lindsay is positioning himself well to prevent Sonnen advancing to mount.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

And that's the end of the fight!
Leo Sonnen comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Sonnen has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
