PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Even Carl (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alex Svensson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Svensson has chosen Shinedown - Diamond Eyes as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Even Carl!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Alex Svensson!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Matti Vanhoillinen and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Svensson stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Svensson wants it to stay on the feet.
Carl looks for the body kick but Svensson saw that one coming.
Svensson tries to counter by closing the distance.
Carl shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Carl throws a series of punches but Svensson avoids them all with ease.

Carl drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Carl is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Svensson knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Carl creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Svensson sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Svensson manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Carl keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
Svensson is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Carl is defending well for now.

Carl works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Svensson bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Carl's guard.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Carl is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Svensson wants to pass the guard but Carl is keeping the position.
Carl on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Carl tries to get out of the position.
Svensson is pushing down on Carl's leg trying to pass to half guard. Carl is fighting to maintain full guard but Svensson has managed to sneak the leg through.
Svensson is trying to control. Carl wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Svensson moves into full mount! Carl won't be happy about that!

It looks like Even Carl has been cut.
Svensson will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
As Svensson looks to move away, Carl throws a big counter combo bu Svensson just gets out of the way.
Carl misses with the combination.
Alex Svensson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Svensson fails with the takedown.
Carl throws a nice inside leg kick.
Svensson tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Carl manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Some wild striking there from Carl.
Carl tries to land a front kick but Svensson steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Svensson avoids a punch combination nicely.
Svensson looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Carl is fending him off so far but Svensson persists. Nope, Carl circles away and we're back to standing.
Svensson pulls out of a head kick attempt.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Svensson misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Svensson changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Carl tries to avoid it but Svensson manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Carl to the ground. Carl escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Even Carl has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Alex Svensson.

Svensson pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Carl throws a series of strikes that have Svensson backpedaling.


It looks like Alex Svensson has been cut.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Carl keeps the fight on the outside.
Sloppy strikes from Carl. Those never looked like landing.
Svensson with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Carl to score with a decent uppercut.
Svensson has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Carl finds it's way round the side to connect with Svensson's head.
The fight stays on the outside here - Svensson looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Carl throws a nice looking combination but Svensson bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Svensson moves in looking to clinch but Carl pushes him off.
Svensson fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Carl avoids it really well and circles away.

Carl shoots in and gets a takedown into Svensson's guard.

Svensson is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Carl postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Carl accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Even Carl overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Carl is working Svensson over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Carl loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Carl is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Svensson can do to turn this around?

Carl postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Svensson is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Carl, into his guard.

Svensson tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Carl defends well and Svensson ends up having to push Carl into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Svensson gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Carl to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Carl turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Carl manages to end up in side control.
