PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Conor McGregor (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shita Urayama (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Conor McGregor!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Shita Urayama!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Taro Takaoka and Tatsuya Matsuyama.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Urayama shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says McGregor as he avoids it easily.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Urayama fails to pull guard.

McGregor has clasped his hands together around Urayama's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.

Urayama throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!
McGregor scores with a kick to the midsection.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Urayama walks forward, straight into a front kick from McGregor.

Urayama fails to land the takedown.
Conor McGregor has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Shita Urayama.

McGregor drives through with a takedown into guard.

Urayama is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Urayama controls McGregor momentarily but McGregor frees himself.
McGregor really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

McGregor got a little sloppy there for a moment and Urayama has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, McGregor has managed to get both his arms back between Urayama's legs - danger averted.
Urayama should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Urayama is trying to control the position but McGregor postures up.
McGregor engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
McGregor's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Urayama looking for a sweep. Not yet Urayama, not yet.
Urayama bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in McGregor's guard.

McGregor is pulling down on Urayama's head to control his posture.

McGregor looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Urayama wanted to stand there but McGregor had control of the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
McGregor wants to sweep here but Urayama controlling him for the moment.

McGregor tries to strike from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Urayama wants to control from the top but McGregor keeps moving.
Urayama slips nicely into half guard.
We've been informed that Urayama has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Urayama tries to pass the half guard into mount. McGregor knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
McGregor is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Urayama seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but McGregor does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

McGregor fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Urayama to the ground. McGregor is now in Urayama's guard.
McGregor will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Urayama controls McGregor momentarily but McGregor frees himself.
Urayama can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as McGregor controls the pace.
McGregor pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Urayama is keeping the position for now.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Urayama wants to stand up but McGregor is controlling him.
McGregor in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Conor McGregor will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Urayama not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
McGregor throws a big elbow that misses.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Urayama lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.


Urayama postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! McGregor is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Urayama, into his guard.

McGregor has gone for a leg lock! Urayama slips out almost immediately though and dives into McGregor's guard.

Urayama forces his way into half guard.
McGregor is doing well to control the position and prevent Urayama from advancing to side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
McGregor wants to control the action here but instead Urayama manages to pass to full mount!
McGregor manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Urayama wants to pass the guard but McGregor is defending well.
Urayama seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but McGregor does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
McGregor wants to control but Urayama is keeping busy.
McGregor is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Urayama's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Urayama's back!

McGregor is hanging on to Urayama's back as he tries to escape.
McGregor controls the position.
McGregor seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Urayama for as long as he can get away with.
Urayama is trying to remain composed but McGregor is hammering down strikes to the side of his head.

Urayama is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if McGregor gets his way!
McGregor keeps control of the position as Urayama tries to break free.
Urayama is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
McGregor is not going to allow Urayama to sit and survive in this position.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!



McGregor closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Urayama's guard.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

McGregor is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

McGregor prevents Urayama from improving his position.
McGregor wants to free his trapped foot but Urayama is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Urayama holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Urayama is trying to stand up here but McGregor is controlling him well.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
McGregor is nestled in close to Urayama, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
McGregor thows a huge punch but Urayama dodges it nicely.
McGregor performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Urayama wants to control but McGregor is keeping busy and won't allow it.

McGregor seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

McGregor stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.

Urayama gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Urayama tries to land a sweep but no joy.

McGregor decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Urayama, up you get!
McGregor misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
McGregor stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and McGregor wants it to stay on the feet.
Urayama takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

McGregor darts in and clinches Urayama up against the cage.

McGregor has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Urayama regains guard immediately.
Urayama wants to get back to his feet but McGregor passes into half guard.
Shita Urayama has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Conor McGregor is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Conor McGregor overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Conor McGregor showed his dominance in that final round.
Well McGregor has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
