PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Sailor Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Shaw (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gracie's entrance music is Disciples of Power - Lords of Creation. A fine choice. Shaw is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Family Force 5 - Chainsaw. Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Sailor Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jack Shaw!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Daniel Franklin and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gracie shoots in and drives through. Shaw sprawls well.
Gracie sets himself, and Shaw steps forward looking for the clinch! Gracie avoids it this time.
Shaw connects with a body shot.
Gracie shoots in for a takedown but Shaw shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Shaw flicks out a counter leg kick but Gracie steps away.
Gracie shoots and misses
and Shaw counters with a series of strikes. Gracie will be more careful next time no doubt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sailor Gracie. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Gracie is trying hard to land a takedown here. Shaw sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Gracie backing away here, and Shaw unleashes a leg kick that just misses.

Shaw has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Gracie is landing a low percentage of strikes.

Shaw throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Gracie is keen to just control but Shaw is a slippery customer.

Shaw tries to roll over but Gracie keeps him under control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Gracie is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Gracie throws a strike but Shaw avoids it easily and moves to full guard.

Shaw wants to sweep here but Gracie controlling him for the moment.
Shaw utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Shaw is on top in guard.

Shaw wants to control from the top but Gracie keeps moving.

Gracie has his foot on Shaw's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Shaw works his way back into a safe position though.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Shaw is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Gracie tries to roll over but Shaw keeps him under control.
Gracie has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Shaw is working away from the top position though.
Shaw frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Gracie tries to hold on but Shaw pushes him away.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Shaw content just to control the position here.
Shaw's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Gracie tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Shaw paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Shaw wants to counter the offense by Gracie and move into the clinch position.
Shaw fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Gracie is out of range.
Gracie misses with a takedown attempt

and Shaw counters by clinching up.
Shaw manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Gracie tries for a takedown but Shaw manages to get underhooks.

Gracie shoots for a double leg takedown but Shaw sprawls well. He's pushed Gracie's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Shaw throws a counter combo.
Gracie wants to clinch up but Shaw keeps it at a distance.
Shaw is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Gracie with a body shot.

Sailor Gracie seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Shaw lands a nice uppercut.
Shaw tries to work over Gracie's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

Gracie is trying to drag Shaw to the mat but Shaw just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Gracie tries to pull guard but Shaw holds him up against the cage and eventually Gracie drops back down to his feet.
Shaw lands a body shot.
Gracie is looking to take this one to the mat.
Gracie tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Shaw misses with a hook from the clinch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Shaw swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Gracie drops down looking for an ankle pick but Shaw pulls his leg out and moves away.
Gracie misses with a takedown attempt - Shaw sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Shaw throws a fast counter high kick but Gracie manages to duck under it in time.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jack Shaw showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Gracie has taken the fight to the clinch.
Gracie goes for a takedown attempt but Shaw pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Jack Shaw seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Gracie goes for a double leg but Shaw avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Shaw continues to drive forward.
Gracie tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Shaw swivels and escapes.
Shaw now looks to counter with a shot at the body.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sailor Gracie. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Gracie closes the distance and clinches up with Shaw, looking for a takedown. Gracie pushes Shaw against the cage but Shaw circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Shaw is looking to reverse the position.

Gracie wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Shaw, who protects the arm well.

Shaw is trying to get back to half guard.
Gracie has knee on belly momentarily but Shaw bucks him off and regains half guard.

Gracie is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Shaw defends it well.

Shaw is defending against the submission attempts here by Gracie.

Gracie is trying to work for a kimura but Shaw is defending well.

Gracie is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Gracie looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Shaw with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Gracie is working for a submission of some sort.
Gracie thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Gracie throwing shots but Shaw is blocking nicely.
Gracie throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Sailor Gracie has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Gracie is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Shaw makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Shaw.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Shaw is on top in guard.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Sailor Gracie showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Shaw has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Jack Shaw seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
Sailor Gracie spoke after the fight, saying 'Dimensionless, I shall return stronger than you can imagine.'.
