The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Duncan throws out a loose jab but Mertens uses good head movement to avoid it.
Mertens changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Duncan clinches up against the cage.
Duncan misses with a hook from the clinch.
Duncan is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Mertens pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Duncan jumps into guard, dragging Mertens to the mat.

Mertens drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Mertens jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Duncan really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Mertens drops back looking for a leg! Duncan is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Duncan manages to kick Mertens off! Mertens jumps back into Duncan's guard.

Mertens thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Mertens wants to pass the guard but Duncan is keeping the position.

Mertens sitting in guard doing not very much at all here. Duncan doesn't need a second invitation though! He's locked up a guillotine and he's squeezing tight! That is tiiiiiiiiight! Mertens paying the price for stalling here - he's pushing hard on the arm trying to free himself but it's no use! He's tapped! WOW, quick submission from Duncan - great work!
