Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Chris Mayo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Martez Cortega (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mayo kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Super Furry Animals - Golden Retriever. Martez Cortega has the eye of the tiger tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 35 - 36 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Chris Mayo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 22 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Martez Cortega!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Roger Salmon and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mayo looks to land a left hand but Cortega moved out of range nicely.

Cortega closes the distance and clinches.

Mayo tries to land knees in the clinch but Cortega avoids the damage to the body.

Cortega drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Cortega escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

and Mayo counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Martez Cortega seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Mayo tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Cortega was well out of range. Poor timing from Mayo.
Mayo moves out of range of the strikes.
Cortega misses with a straight left.

Cortega forces Mayo back against the cage and clinches.
Mayo lands with a light punch inside.
Mayo creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Mayo pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.
Mayo is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

Cortega blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Mayo misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Cortega.
Cortega has Mayo pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Mayo manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

The crowd are getting pretty annoyed with Mayo for his constant stalling in the clinch and are voicing their displeasure.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Cortega throws a right hand that Mayo ducks under and follows up with a left that Mayo also avoids with ease.

Cortega clinches up with Mayo and pushes him back against the cage.
Mayo is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Cortega is defending well for now.

Cortega ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Cortega no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Cortega is trying to hold Mayo in close to prevent damage but Mayo has managed to pass into half guard.

Mayo uses his free foot to push down on Cortega's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Cortega.

Mayo postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Cortega looks a forlorn figure.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Mayo with a couple of short strikes.
Mayo lands a big shot there that rocks Cortega but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Mayo connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Both fighters have adopted an aggressive gameplan on the ground!
Cortega is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Cortega might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Mayo haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Mayo cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Cortega regains half guard.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Mayo connects with a nice short shot to Cortega's temple.
Mayo working over Cortega with some ground and pound. Cortega looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Mayo slips a nice elbow through Cortega's hands, connecting with Cortega's forehead.
Mayo wants to free his trapped foot but Cortega is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Mayo is trying to control. Cortega wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Mayo thows a huge punch but Cortega dodges it nicely.
Mayo looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Cortega with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Cortega is staying active underneath Mayo, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Mayo seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Mayo working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Oooooh, big shot lands for Mayo! Cortega is hurt baaadly! Mayo is firing away with more strikes - Cortega is covering up... the ref is warning him to do something. He's just covering up though still and the ref has to step in to end the fight! This one is all over!
