PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Bung Popper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Takeshi Tono (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Popper comes to the cage accompanied by Runnin with the Devil. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Bung Popper!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Takeshi Tono!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Colin Fray and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tono fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Popper avoids it really well and circles away.
Tono throws a sloppy head kick and Popper moves out of range easily.
Popper feinted with a counter takedown.
Sloppy strikes from Tono. Those never looked like landing.
Popper attempts a counter takedown but Tono avoids it well and moves away.

Tono shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Popper manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Tono throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Nice takedown defense from Popper. No joy for Tono on that attempt.

Takeshi Tono seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Tono throws a lazy head kick

and Popper counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Popper definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Popper pushes down on Tono's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Tono wants to control but Popper is keeping busy.
Popper drops an elbow to the side of Tono's head.
Popper is taking a breather. Tono says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Popper connects with a nice short shot to Tono's temple.

Tono has an active guard here but Popper has managed to pass into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Popper uses his free foot to push down on Tono's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Tono.

Popper lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Popper lands a couple of good shots and Tono has given up his back, trying to escape the position!

Popper controlling the position well here. Tono rolled but Popper kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.

Popper has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Tono has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

Takeshi Tono is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Tono shoots in looking for a takedown. Popper tries to sprawl out of it but Tono keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Popper manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Horrible takedown attempt by Tono or perhaps it was just good defense by Popper, which made it look bad.

Takeshi Tono has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Tono is trying to drag Popper to the mat but Popper just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Bung Popper has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Takeshi Tono.
Tono throws a knee to the head but misses.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Popper blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Popper, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Bung Popper decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
