Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Dennis Acevedo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Henry Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Henry Smith has the eye of the tiger tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Dennis Acevedo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Henry Smith!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Micheangelo Fripello and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Acevedo misses with a looping left.
Acevedo goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Acevedo has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Acevedo there as he acknowledges the shot.

Smith scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Acevedo manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Smith wants to lay and pray for a moment but Acevedo keeps working.

Smith is trying to work for a kimura but Acevedo is defending well.
Smith throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Smith prevents Acevedo from improving his position.

Acevedo looking for submissions off his back.
Acevedo avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Smith.
Smith looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Smith is trying to control. Acevedo wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Smith is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Acevedo defends it well.

Acevedo actively working from the bottom here.
Acevedo taking some punishment here, with Smith in his half guard.
Smith missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Smith throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Acevedo to regain full guard.

Smith postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Acevedo is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Smith, into his guard.

Acevedo stays in close to Smith's body and controls the position.
Acevedo missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Smith can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Acevedo controls the pace.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Acevedo attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.

Smith shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Acevedo trying to control but Smith postures up.
Smith is just content to waste time from the top position. Acevedo takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Acevedo has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Smith can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Acevedo looking for a guillotine here but Smith defends easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Henry Smith dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


A looping hook to the body misses from Smith. Acevedo does a little dance to reset his feet.
Acevedo wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.

Smith feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Smith looking to sit in guard and control but Acevedo gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Acevedo's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Smith tries to land a sweep but no joy.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smith keeping busy, throwing shots from the bottom.
Smith can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Acevedo controls the pace.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Acevedo stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smith swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Smith has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Acevedo is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Smith.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.

Acevedo tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Smith is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
Smith wants to control but Acevedo postures up.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Acevedo remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Smith throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Smith misses with a looping left.
Acevedo tries to counter by clinching up but Smith breaks away and moves out of range.
Dennis Acevedo is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Smith looking to score a takedown here. Acevedo is defending well but Smith drives through and ends up in Acevedo's guard.

Smith postures up.
Smith trying to control but Acevedo is working from the bottom.
Smith scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

Henry Smith has got the better of the ground game so far.

Acevedo escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smith gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Acevedo is looking for a triangle but Smith pushes his legs off easily.
Smith has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Smith wants to stand but Acevedo has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Smith looking to sit in guard and control but Acevedo gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Acevedo won't allow Smith to sweep him here.

Acevedo is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

A close second round but Henry Smith will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Smith closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Acevedo to the mat! Acevedo manages to get full guard.

Acevedo is looking for a triangle here but Smith uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Acevedo really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Acevedo is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Smith off and has taken his back!
Smith trying to control but not successfully.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Smith can't escape the position.
Acevedo really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Smith.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Acevedo is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Smith has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.
Acevedo controls the action.
Acevedo continues to stall.

Smith tries to break free.
Smith trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.
Acevedo will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
Smith is in bad spot here.

Acevedo keeps control of the position as Smith tries to break free.

You can see the frustration on Smith's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

Henry Smith is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Acevedo gets his hands free as Smith looks to control.
