PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Matthew Carroll (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Wei Liu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Matthew Carroll!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Wei Liu!
The judges for this bout are Dillan Fox, Ian Loll and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Liu fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Carroll sprawls well initially but Liu persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Liu is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Carroll defends it well.

Liu wants to work for an arm triangle but Carroll is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Liu is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Carroll is just riding it out for now. Liu eventually gives up the hold.

Liu is actively looking for submissions here but good counter grappling here from Carroll as he works his way to full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Carroll wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Liu drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Carroll dives on top into guard.

Liu is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Carroll defends well.
Carroll wanted to stand there but Liu had control of the position.
Carroll is in close to Liu's body, working some short punches and elbows.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Liu looking for a guillotine here but Carroll defends easily.
Carroll is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Liu is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Liu has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Carroll is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Liu.
Carroll lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Liu wants to control but Carroll postures up.
Liu parries the strikes from Carroll easily there. Carroll is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Liu to escape.

Carroll is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Liu is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Liu takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.

Carroll controlling the position from side mount.
Carroll wants to lay and pray for a moment but Liu keeps working.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Carroll fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Liu to the ground. Carroll is now in Liu's guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Liu is looking for a triangle but Carroll pushes his legs off easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Liu fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Carroll avoids it really well and circles away.
Carroll shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Liu as he jumps to the side.
Liu closes this distance looking for a takedown but Carroll circles away.
Wei Liu is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Carroll shoots in but Liu avoids the takedown attempt easily.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Carroll is defended easily by Liu.
Carroll sets himself, and Liu steps forward looking for the clinch! Carroll avoids it this time.

and Carroll counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Liu thinking.
Carroll tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Carroll clinches with his opponent.
Carroll is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Liu pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Carroll has Liu pushed against the cage.
Carroll drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Liu prevents a takedown attempt there.
Liu is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Liu has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Carroll avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Carroll has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Liu is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Carroll has clasped his hands together around Liu's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Carroll knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Liu on the ground.

Carroll is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Liu knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Liu is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Carroll is controlling him well.

Carroll tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Carroll has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Liu is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Carroll has control of an arm but Liu manages to advance to Carroll's back!

Liu is working for the choke. He's slipped one arm under the chin. Carroll has to defend the other arm for all he's worth... but Liu has managed to get that arm free too and he's tightening the choke! Carroll taps out and looks absolutely disgusted with himself. Liu doesn't care though - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:51 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Wei Liu!
